What paint would you use on a banister hand rail?

I recently re-painted my woodwork with water based satin paint. I knew that it wouldn’t stick if the previous paint was solvent based so everything was well rubbed down first. I used the same paint on my doors, skirting boards etc and it’s fine for those but areas that get touched a lot like banisters seem to feel ‘sticky’ after a while. This happened in my last house too. Has anyone else found this? Will I have to revert to a solvent based paint to avoid this? What do you all use for bannisters?
