Unusual design, certainly a bit different! Is it upvc? I personally think Apex porches are aesthetically more pleasing and sit well with most house styles. Here’s some examples from upvc to solid oak. Does this sort of design appeal to you? It is something a good builder could achieve, more than a window company.

I took down a monstrosity of a conservatory at the back of my house and it had bitumen all round the edge. I couldn't remove it but had intended to render the wall anyway. Your may have some kind of white sealant round the edge which may be easier to remove. Either way, if you want rid of it, it may be worth it. There is also the issue of the floor inside it and the paving slabs outside. Do you have any plans for the paving?

Thanks for the feedback, we had something similar in mind. Would you suggest bringing the door out to the front? What about the windows either side, we would think about replacing maybe in a different colour, possibly grey, and add some cedar cladding to the house front and paint walls grey. We are also toying with the idea of bring double doors out to the front with arclight over head and then to add coving around the windows with arc that mirrors the arc light to try and soften the whole angular look to to the front. Mixing antique brass and polished chrome in the dining room & kitchen

What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. Also yes the room is small but that's not an issue - it is what it is and I'm fine with it!

Just wanted to add something regarding the steps since I had also asked for advice on them: we had steps installed in slate, but unfortunately they did not turn out to look very nice, so will need to get redone . Was wondering if we should also incorporate some of the bricks seen on the porch, perhaps as risers covered by blue limestone or slate just to tie everything together?

Looking for ideas for updating front door and vestibule/porch area. Do I keep and update exterior sliding door or replace? I'm edging towards a light green for our internal door as goes with interior scheme. Hall quite dark so thinking of moving light fixture inside interior door and keeping as much glass in doors as possible. Any one with similar set-up or a creative brain that can share ideas? I'm stumped! (Didnt know how to add photos so included below in comments). Based in Cork city.

Yes we will repave the area outside. It didn't seem much of a problem when we moved in but now it seems it could be very costly. You live and learn!!

Hi Tony, I can’t vouch for other builders, but for my builder brother that would be a pretty straightforward job with the brickwork and he then has a local company who make the windows and my brother fits them too. He would then get a roofer to complete the roof bit. As I say I can’t vouch for other builders, but a good one could easily rebuild the porch.

I like Sonia’s first suggestion (the one with the white door).

Something like that would suit the property.

Have you considered a path perhaps leading to it?

I feel that would make it all more welcoming and make more of an entrance (pun intended 😊).

Do you need a porch? I know they can be very useful but your house is I'm guessing late 60's to 70's and was never designed to have one. As a nation we seem to cling to "period" features and are desperate to put them into our houses even when they are out of place. Someone has added fake leaded windows to your house and a curious bay window. The porch was I guess an attempt to match that window and since leaded windows would be too much have opted for Georgian bars.

I would remove the porch and if you can't live without it for practical reasons get a brick one built similar to option two. It will impact upon your bay window so try and keep as far apart as possible and match the roof angles to the gable above.

We could easily live without a porch but we are worried that by taking it down we will leave marks on the brickwork from the sealants.

If you removed it you could fit a canopy instead. Canopies are a good idea anyway as they shelter you before you unlock the door.

Porches work well as the place to remove and leave muddy/wet clothing and footwear, otherwise your hall takes over this function - unless you don't use your front door for entry when wet.

Yes there will be sealant/fixing marks, but will it really matter? Probably only you would notice. A canopy would probably cover those up. If no canopy a trim board of some description would also cover it.

Be aware with any replacement porch that if you want it to look symmetrical then the door will always be offset relative to the front door.

I actually quite like it. If it had a stub wall it would probably look more "current". It's a bit quirky and in keeping with the age of the

I agree with the comments here suggesting changing the garden instead, that seems like it would be much cheaper and could completely change the look of the property.
Build a new pathway to the front door and create an orangery in the existing porch?

You could easily paint the existing porch the same colour green as your tree planters, then fill the inside with greenery and colourful plants.

I have similar bay windows added to my 70s semi. I used to hate themuntil I realised that it would be expensive to replace it. Also my neighbours had windows similar to mine.

So I simply painted the white front UPVC door with a blue grey paint, added hydrangeas under one window etc. While it’s not ideal, I can live with that now.
Would you consider adding a front garden and a walkway instead? You’d be looking at plants instead of the front porch.

We were going to have our porch replaced then realised we were going to be paying almost 10,000 for somewhere to put our shoes and wellies 😳 so decided (in profess of) taking down the existing old porch, new front door going in next month, having canopy fitted over front door and front bay window. Will also have security down lights in the new canopy. Then will have brickwork rendered along bricks under new canopy and new front door 👍🤩
