I wouldn't be going for spotlights or changing the flooring, combined those changes may leave you with a very 'cold' feeling rather than a cocooning bedroom. Yes, change the light fitting definitely. Changing you drapery to say, roman blinds will help with a m odern feel. Would it be possible to change the doors and drawer fronts on the units to flat ones. I think it's the shapes in the panels which are the dating these away from modern.
Could you turn the doors and drawer fronts around, are they flat behind? Once you have filled in the holes, repainted them and added new handles they would look more contemporary
I’m with Kazzh and s Gina - it’s the wardrobe doors that are “aging” your room. There are loads of companies that specialise in replacement doors, however I think that you could probably find a local carpenter who could make new fronts at a reasonable price.
You could use black very effectively if used as a highlight - in the light fitting, in a pattern on a rug, black on white or cream ground quilt, or black throw on crisp bedlinen, trim or light pattern on roman blinds..
