...keep away from brilliant white at all costs !!....you will end up with a stark feel to your room. A contrast with the skirtings and windows is a good idea. Some photos of your room and kitchen cupboards etc would be really useful in helping get advice on a colour....

If you are after a sophisticated level of harmony, it’s possible to measure the key colour attributes of your quartz worktop. That data tells you in which Hue Family the worktop belongs, the Value (lightness/darkness) of the surface, Chroma (how near to neutral or colourful it is), LRV - how much light it reflects and absorbs.

Once you have that data, it’s possible to choose a white which best offsets those attributes along with your other chosen paint colour of Basalt. . All paint colours including whites/black/greys/neutrals can be measured No guessing required.

Fads come and go. Pick what you love, not what is in style. Make your home yours. Take samples to your home of all the materials you think your may like, cover colors that you are not going to keep with some white paper and live with the samples for a few days. The lighting in your home and the other colors that you have in your kitchen and in the adjoining rooms will guide your selection. I have done this often and every time I walk into a room with samples I find myself drawn to one or another consistantly and the decision is made based on what feels good to me.

Hi all, I'm looking for some inspiration and help with a wall colour for a kitchen and sunroom. Basically I have Farrow and Ball Pavillion Grey kitchen units and need some advice on a colour that would work well on the walls. I have tried a sample of Colour Trend Oyster bed but its too similar to the pavillion grey. Any tips or suggestions would be really appreciated...really stuck on this one! Thanks a mill

Marylee, should I be choosing a white directly opposite the basalt on the wheel?

And if choosing an off white, do I then do the skirting board the same off white? Or brilliant white?

Whites taken from the Yellow Hue Family are certainly complementary to the Purple-Blue Hue Family of Basalt, which can add a little kick to your colour palette.

But if you can take into consideration the colour measurements of your other fixed finishes (flooring/work surface/tiles) also, it will help make your palette all the more cohesive. It’s good to understand what you already have, before choosing paint colours to work with those finishes and the available light in your space.

Even the most basic of those colour measurements, the Hue Family is powerful stuff. It’s not always that easy to know to which Hue Family many colours belong, just by eye. Especially with lots of near neutrals, so many of us have in the home these days.

Using the same white on walls & trim, only in different finishes, is one straightforward approach to incorporating white.

But if you fancy the idea of adding some extra layers of interest, it is possible to combine whites and off-whites successfully, if you keep a few things in mind.

Key to this is a minimum difference in Chroma of 0.2.

This stops one of the ‘whites’ looking dingy or dirty next to the other.

Choosing 2 whites which are not toooo close together in Hue angle, nor too far apart either also helps.

And if there is some difference in Value, (one lighter or darker than the other) that will only add to the feel of contrast.

P.s. Have a look at the website Homebunch. Com an American site, with some incredible real homes.

It’s particularly interesting as it names all the paint colours used. There are lots and lots of white + off/white combinations for kitchens.

If you’re wanting to keep the skirting boards etc it may be worth

looking at LG loft white which shouldn’t clash with the brilliant white. If you’re wanting to change skirting etc I’d try slaked lime as shown here (with basalt)

Is the rest of your house white too? If not, then your kitchen will look like you've jut put undercoat up and not decided on the finished colour yet. You'd be better to choose a pale neutral which has the same undertones as any other undertone in your kitchen (floor, tile, cabinet, worktop). If it's all going to be white then definitely do the same white on the skirtings and walls for a seamless, modern look. And never use Brilliant White apart from on a ceiling (and even then, think twice) if you want a more "custom" looking home.
