Is this too small an en-suite?

Hiya - we are looking to add an en-suite to our bedroom by turning the airing cupboard and part of our bedroom into it. On the architect drawings the room measures 1000mm wide and 2930mm long.

Firstly, does this feel too small to have a nice fresh feel? I’d hate to end up showering in a box!

Secondly, I was thinking I’d be able to fit a shower tray that’s 1000mm wide by 800 or 900 deep but do I need to leave some space for a stud fixture to house the showera pipe work in? Or does that typically get chased into the wall? I was hoping for concealed shower fixtures.

Any advice on what clearance/regulation I need to follow too would be hugely appreciated, I can’t tell what’s a legal requirement vs. Recommended.

Thanks all this is very reassuring! Here is a pic of the layout. The wall between the bedroom and the en-suite is going to be stud while The opposite wall with sink against it is a solid outer wall (but we’ve an extension the other side of it now) so that was making me think if I put the shower head on that wall then I’d need to have it built out a bit to accommodate piping Or chased in (?) - so perhaps the more logical option is to have the shower head on the bedroom wall side where it’s stud or from the Far end wall and then Pop a niche in the stud?

Wet room would be the dream Sarah but I think too costly for us so hoping we can get a slimline tray not on risers ideally, or if it has to be raised, to make a feature of it by tiling or making a wee flat bit before

tray starts.

There are no regulations on bathroom/ensuite sizes, but the minimum recommended for an ensuite with shower, toilet and basin is 0.8m x 1.8m (with an outward opening door). Would you consider a wetroom?

Could you share a pic of the drawings? My shower controls are chased into the wall, but to be honest it has caused crazing and cracking of the plaster to the outer wall, so next time I will have them visible! I think your shower size is fine. Mine is a corner one (tiny room) and it’s 900 x 900 and plenty big enough.

hello, instead of a sofa.....maybe try 2 big cushiony chairs and a shared ottoman that can double as a coffee table/facing each other in front of the fireplace? This is a small space, lets accept that. Moving into the kitchen you can have a table with chairs and in the event you have a party, people can sit for the meal and hang in the kitchen. I like small spaces, it forces a creativity and the need for utility in design, and less room for clutter!

Hi Isobel, Could you add an obscured film to the window instead? I would have thought that this would be fine with planning as it's removable. I'm assuming that the planning restriction is because you're in a conservation area? The films come in different finishes, I've had a fairly successful go at applying a sandblasted one. There are specialist companies that will do it for you though

Hello Would anyone have experience with a similar property to ours and share their solution/knowledge? Issue We have a small Victorian cottage gable-onto-driveway with L-shaped garden. The hall door, porch is three-quarters of the way down the property. Our modest accommodation 3 bedrooms (at gable) (the double b/room currently doubles up as a playroom), sitting room, (internal/no windows) bathroom and then scullery kitchen and off that a side return ('internal' courtyard which we have nice storage outbuilding and in is also where we also grow vegetables, fruit etc. Our idea We would like to bring the porch to the 'front' of the cottage. We want build a hall cottage entrance replicated but flush with corridor-hall. The bedrooms would then have new entrance doors through old gable wall into new hall. The hall door will be centre of the new hall, build a bathroom to one side (external window, proper ventilation). This new hallway would wrap around to the left of the property into a 30sqm room with french doors facing front and french doors at other end of that room (onto leftover section of garden) and this room would have a small en suite. This room would connect by french doors (subsume the current windows into the sitting room). The internal bathroom can be (happily!) demolished and space used to double the size of kitchen and connect by barn door/sliding solid door to playroom/dining room. We think this build would provide adequate living space for our small family and a flow to the house with spaces that can join up and close off, such flow which it currently lacks. Any advice / issues with hallway (integral porch, hall door) at gable with wraparound to garden room?

If the shower tray was 1000 wide & 900 deep, you could still have a concealed shower fitted with a stud wall at the back of the shower rather than to the side.

We’re adding a shower room to our house which will be a metre wide and about 5m long. We’re having a shower 900x1200, a wc and basin plus the washing machine will go in there too. We’re very pleased with the plans and are just working through the specification for the works. So I’d say your space sounds fine.

An en suite in our previous house was 90cm x 3m. As long as the door is in the middle you can have a shower cubicle at one end, a W.C. at the other end and a small hand basin on the side wall. It’s not luxurious but works perfectly well.

Hi Fearn, did you complete your project? I’m looking at doing the same with the same measurements as you and my husband is worried it’ll feel claustrophobic and tight. Do you have any pictures? Thanks

We decided to do this as a second phase to our renovation so haven’t completed it yet but do plan to and I’m not worried about the size anymore. Mainly because having visited a few properties on holiday, and measuring them while there (always one to pack a tape measure!) I have seen how nice even a small en-suite can be. Good luck with your project, if you do go ahead and do share pics!!
