Repointing - Bottom to Top?

Hi,

We need to repoint our 1830 stone cottage as it currently has hard cement mortar. Is there any reason why we can't start at the bottom and work to the top? We want to do it that way as we have damp issues at the bottom so really want to get that sorted first. Are there any structural implications of doing it this way, or it is just advised top to bottom so you don't put mess on the joints you have just pointed?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi Abi,

you have asked a question and answered it yourself. it is generally done top to bottom to prevent damaging the work done earlier. if you work at the bottom you can wait for the area to dry before then working the upper level top to bottom.

when doing the job you must ensure you keep the mixing of lime mortar or cement mortar precise to keep the finished colour continuous throughout.

how far are you raking out the bricks?? close to 25mm is ideal for repainting work.

HI -- I put a picture on my idea book for you (last one) . I think something like that would look great and not visually close things in . You would have to have the glass in a sliding by pass panels rather than folding . You could also have the glass frameless rather than the thin black framing , but I like the black for the interest it adds.

Hi I'm getting my office painted, it's a smallish room, north facing, and I am a fan of bold colour. For this reason I"m thinking of putting colourtrend priory blue on top and icehouse on the bottom. There is a white rail in the middle of the room. And the ceiling white comes down a bit at the top. What do you think of doing the usual of putting dark on bottom and light on top? is that done for a reason? Has anyone else done this and did it work out alright? thanks M
