Smart sun shading solutions for South-facing extension

Looking for ideas for shading the bifold doors and space behind a single-storey rear extension. South-facing.

- Used a parasol butted right up to the house, but not best solution as bashes rendering in light winds and ours is broken after a year of use!

- Space between roof and top of doors too small and low to have awning mounted. Can use gutter brackets but they look ugly.

- Looked at shade sails but the "arc" formed between the two attachment points either side of doors mean that there's a gap with no shading right next to the house above doors). Also it's low. Again gutter brackets could rise the attachment points (house-side) but ugly. Posts either side of the house won't work as they would have to be set away from the house due to the gutter.

- Pergolas can work but seem like a permanent solution for something that probably affects 3-4 months of any year. It would have to be at least 3m deep as that is needed to prevent lower sun getting into the house. Our 3m parasol proved this to us!

- Any other ideas? I did wonder about trees, but they'd have to be very close and overhang.

So it’s the house you want to shade rather than the garden? There are blinds that fit within the recesses of bifolds which may help with that. They are called pleated blinds.

We actually have these already, however, was looking to be able to shade the doors as well and also be able to open the doors in summer!

Gosh, I've returned after a week travelling for work to loads more suggestions - thanks all! To respond specifically: - the house faces south so gets the lovely morning (and in the uk, sometimes the only) sun. - the husband has avoided putting plants in the planters due to maintenance and they're generally twee so comments here have confirmed to me that they will be coming out - love the idea of wooden boxes with the spiky plants and grasses - also like the concept of taking out the grass/bed/tree in front completely out and replacing with slabs - yes to lightening the windows - to the Barn company, I honestly don't mind the advice and I'd never seen sloping garage roofs. - nicking ideas from landscaping of new builds....great idea! - finally, Helen Scholes, I'm embarrassed about the spelling of kerb. Had no idea! Thanks again all.

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

I'm thinking about an extension with large south facing windows to a fantastic view. I'm already worried about sun damage to objects and our skin! Do window manufacturers have solutions to this or do I have to solve it after installation? Anti UV film sounds good, but will it make the light muddy, especially in an Irish winter, when sunlight is a commodity? Anyone have experience?

We're building a Passive house and are debating about brise soleil at the moment to shade the downstairs rooms. We live in Cumbria so similar to you it's only going to be necessary for 2-3 months a year, so nothing too intrusive/ugly. There are some good examples out there, but it's about knowing what to look for.

You might find that it doesn't need to be as wide as you think - only enough to block the sun at its highest couple of hours in the day, and then in winter when the sun is lower you still get the light in

Actually, that was an option I was aware of but forgot to mention! Yes, it's possible and a nice option but would only be around 1m in depth. This is fine for high summer midday sun, but other times I've found we needed 3m to protect for more of the day! We've been using a 3m parasol for 2 years so had a few full years of experimentation. If I was doing my extension again I'd do a flat roof with a 1-1.5m solid overhang and then a further 1.5m slatted overhang beyond that.. Sliding doors and a nice sofa!
