1930s Hallway dilemma

We are redecorating our 1930s hallway and these are the tiles we just bought. We love the style so we are very happy with it👍🏻

My question is:

would you lay the tiles straight or diagonally?
we are thinking to use Sulking Room pink on the walls but we also have considered bancha. Any other suggestion?! Ideally we don’t really want a neutral colour. Hallway is south facing so light and bright the whole day.
We have Inchyra Blue in our living room so does the colour in the hallway has to match or complement the living room colour?!
what colours to use on the stairs and panelling?

Any ideas appreciated. Thank you!

Lay them straight. Diagonal looks weird. How about the walls Ammonite and all the doors in a charcoal grey like downpipe?

Thank you Sonia. I also think it would look a bit weird. We will keep the doors as they are, we will just repaint the door frames, skirting boards etc.

I am afraid I am quite unable to tx photos on to computer. The landing is 1.75 metres wide and 6.75 metres wide with 7 doors off it. You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Maybe it's the black that's the problem not the wood at all

Hi I am painting my house at the moment and time is precious on it as the painter is on site. I would appreciate any recommendations from the Dulux range - House is c. 700 sq foot, rooms small and south facing. I have coving, so I was thinking of a pure white on coving and then an off-white on the ceilings and neutral colours on the wall that create space and are warm at the same time. Doors and skirting need to be painted as well so should I keep these a pure white as well? Living area has smoked oak wood on floor. Carpet will be light cream / beige in the bedrooms and hall. Would appreciate any help as I am against time on this as the painter is on site and has all the prep work done. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

I think laying the tiles diagonally will give a better finish as a straight pattern will have a small sliver of pattern at one or both sides of the narrow part of the hall which I think will look messy and unconsidered.

As far as wall colour goes I think it depends on the colours in other room and light levels. If it’s your intention to use the same colour up the stairs (and because most landings are windowless) I would chose the lighter colour.

Thanks Jonathan. I get what you mean about the tiles. I’ve never seen people laying this tile diagonally in hallways so it could look a bit messy, I don’t know. One day the kitchen door will be the entrance to a kitchen extension so the idea of having straight lines help to draw the eye outward to other focal point maybe?!

About the colour, we don’t mind adding a bit of drama to the hallway. There’s a big window in our landing so it’s a very bright space and we would be using the same colour throughout.

PS. Have you done a test cut ? Cutting then diagonally might be a real hassle .

Diagonally is very pretty.

Sulking Room Pink pairs beautifully with Inchyra Blue too. And here is an alternative which is approx. 8 points lighter, 30YR 40/061 Cocoa Blush 4 from Dulux.

Thank you Marylee. I know Dulux have some lovely colours but husband won’t use any other brand but F&B so maybe Sulking Room Pink could work and will def complement Inchyra Blue in our living room. 🙂

Those tiles are gorgeous! I like them both straight and diagonally, so that isn't much help to you :-)

I do like it when colours in different rooms connect. If you're going for a pink in the hallway for example, I'd put a couple of pink(ish) things in the living room. Maybe a cushion or a vase or even some pink in a piece of wall art. Doesn't have to be much. Just a nod. It will feel connected, even if it's not that noticeable.

Thanks for your comment. Our living room has a burned orange accent on a couple of cushions and on the artwork we ordered. We originally thought of having a dusk pink accent colour there but we decided for the orange instead. The square artwork we ordered has a bit of pink in it... would that be enough? Thanks a lot for your comment and help!

Also, orange and pink work nicely together, so you could add a dusky pink cushion to the orange if you like.

I prefer the tiles straight. I also think that sulking room pink will look fantastic but I wonder if it could jar slightly with the orange cushions in your lounge. Personally I would take your orange cushion out and introduce some similar shade pink or at least get a cushion that has the orange in it in a pattern. I think the solid orange seems to stand out too much. You could always add some flowers or vases in the fireplace that mix a burnt orange and deep pink to bring the scheme together?
