Multi functional space - how to fit two workstations into one bedroom!

Hi everyone

I’m looking for some advice on how best to lay out our spare room - latest indication from my husband and I’s workplace is that flexible WFH is here to stay, so we have to finally migrate from the dining table and set up a more permanent workspace solution!

Our spare bedroom dimension is approx 4.4m x 2.4m. We want to keep a wardrobe, plus our daybed for when guests are able to stay (it’s everyone’s favourite, the Ikea Hemnes daybed!). At the moment an electronic piano and a TV unit are also in the room, but they’ll have to make way for two desks.

I’ve come up with a couple of rough layouts and I’m looking for suggestions on which, if either, is better. The room will be used as a workspace for the majority of the time, at least in the short term, but I don’t want the room to be too clinical looking.

The desks I’ve looked at are about 100cm wide and 50cm deep, as we both need space for a laptop, separate monitor and a notepad.

Any help will be so appreciated, I’ve been tearing my hair out trying to work out how to fit everything in and still have a nice looking space!

Why not fit some unfinished oak worktop across the width of the room underneath the window to create a twin desk space. We have done this with our spare room and 4 people can work in there at the same time. We bought oak from Worktop Express and finished it with white oil before fitting. Holes drilled through for cables etc.

Are you sure both working in one room will work ? I tried sharing my office with MrOnePlan - and we discovered both trying to speak on calls at same time was a logistical fail . He’s decamped to the garden room instead ! ( it has a beer fridge so he’s happy !)

Would a standing desk suit either of you ? Drop down tables can be useful in these instances ?!

About your plumber saying "plumb layout is confirmed". That is a load of rubbish. It's fairly easy to move drains around (yes he might have to rip up some walls, but he can also do off-the-wall installations to avoid that). In a small bath proper placement is of the utmost importance!!! If you have the bathtub and shower next to each other that will be much better and then the glass separator idea should work. padmaramachandran's (see post above) setup sounds more reasonable to me as well (see first picture below). This is similar to your setup but as you have more space you could put in bath tub and shower where the picture only shows a bath tub. Also if you do it that way you could theoretically have a bidet or a wider wash basin (small double perhaps too). Example layout: Do you need a bathtub in the guest bath? If not you have a lot more room to work with. E.g. for a double wash basin and large walking shower and a bidet (2nd picture). Example of off-the-wall installation for toilet and bidet and a large walking shower. Finally if you ignore this advice and do it the way you planned ;) then I suggest you really thing about that glass separator. Doing it right will make a lot of difference (see 3rd picture). Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Hello nicnoll, Another idea could be to have a wall light that is all about the bulb! A few links to both ideas.... Copper is good too... One other idea... have a rose with multi flex wires... centralised where the current one is.. Or you run them in loops across the ceiling to the opposite wall and have a wall light fitting but the electric cable comes from the one ceiling point. So less to do wiring wise.. Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. @colourhappy a worktop had actually been our original idea, but our windows are quite long (the bottom stops about 68/69 cm from the floor) and I don’t know if it will be too awkward running a slab across the window. If I go at the height that wouldn’t cut across the window I’m worried it will be too low?

@OnePlan in an ideal world we would split across separate rooms, but this is the only room other than the dining room that could accommodate a desk setup... and that room is going to be completely ripped out and insulated/plasterboarded/rewired soon so it will be out of bounds for a while :( maybe I could convince my husband to add a garden room to our list of renos, the beer fridge might convince him :) I’ll have a look into the drop down table option!
