Cooker suggestions, please?

Our kitchen is quite a good size (approx 570 x 470cm) but has limited wall space for units, due to 2 windows, 1 set of patio doors, 2 internal doors and 2 built-in cupboard doors! The room serves as kitchen, dining room and informal seating area. Has served us well for over 35 years but now needs an overhaul, partly because units showing their age, partly because I’m the same! Need to replace elderly electric cooker (rural area, no gas) which has two ovens. I now find using the bigger, lower oven really difficult, would like raised oven unit, but presume this will mean taking up two of the very limited wall spaces - one for oven housing, one for a hob? We will be having an island unit, but I want to keep this completely clear of appliances -e.g. hob or sink - as I use it for sewing, cutting out fabric.

Is there any sort of format which could minimise space for oven + hob? Any suggestions, please?

Hello Jtemm

Getting a higher level oven into your space will require the compromise on wall space. It could be that you can use a mid height oven unit so it does not overpower the space, a bit like the image below. Maybe there is scope to incorporate the built in cupboards somehow to house, or part house the ovens? Would that go partway to helping you solve your design dilema?

I know you want the island clear, but you could have a hob to one side rather than in the middle, which will keep it away from your work space?

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

I would suggest white cabinets with a dark grey Caesarstone counter. The splashback will be the variable with lots of options. This scheme is a lighter and more neutral alternative to the masculine dark grey. Both are great! Good luck, Mary

You can stay neutral but use different textures in the tiles. Glass mixed with ceramic or marble is good. I would put tile on the entire backsplash and make a great accent piece over the range. Change up the patterns also. It will add interest without adding too much color. If you want to be bolder, chose one or two colors in the tiles that you can live with or that you have in the rest of the house. That will pull your color scheme into the kitchen and make a cohesive look as you go throughout the house.

Hello, looking for some advise please? We are North facing so entrance hallway is quite dark. we have black and white tiles and hope to add pannelling to hall stairs and landing in white. we're thinking of going with a warm bright colour for walls but unsure... anyone have a suggestion that would be great, appreciate your responses;)

Thanks for both suggestions, and I'll bear them in mind. Have also just had another thought that I might look at an electric range cooker, 90cm width, which would save some unit space along the wall. Most of them seem to have one narrow but full-height oven, as well as a grill/oven, and a low oven, so I could use the grill/oven or the top of the full-height oven without having to bend or crouch down, but would still have the additional space for when the family visit, when one of them can do the crouching down for me! Any thoughts on the pros and cons of that idea? - and also re induction hobs?

I agree with Sonia, if you can have a big enough island you could have an asymmetrical island... I love my eye level oven, so much easier and personally would be my preference (Obviously I know everyone has different balances...)

Maybe talk to a kitchen designer? Or a concept planner like @OnePlan to see what other options there are? You can get some super fancy deigns with hidden sinks or hidden hobs perhaps? a hob reset into the worktop (as opposed to proud of it)

Is there an option to do something unexpected? Like move a door, or block a window to give you more wall space? (I chose to leave out a window from my extension/remodel to allow me to put in the units I wanted... Now it's 30 degrees I'm glad I've not got south facing windows in the kitchen!)

As with most things, I think it'll come down to budget and what you value more highly unfortunately!

Thanks for the mention Gabby ! We have designed banks of tall units free standing for people who are dividing a space or have limited wall space but what built up ovens ... I’ll see if I can dig up an image ... these are just draft renders - there are finished images of some past projects in our pro page ... click on my name or icon to get there!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, Gabby & OnePlan (and everyone) There's no option to block either a window or a door, unfortunately - 200 year old farmhouse in rural north Scotland, and I think that, over the years, we've already fiddled around with the structure as much as it will withstand! Also, we really don't want to spend too much on it, as it's not exactly what you'd call a 'forever home' (I'm mid-70s so, realistically, not going to be able to live here for more than a few more years, and a new buyer might not like what I put in, anyway)

However, I hadn't thought of the concealed sink/hob idea - a recessed hob with cover might well fit the bill (depending on cost, of course!) I'll look into that - many thanks!
