Oak flooring/fireplace. What colour walls?

I will soon be looking to decorate open living/dining room. It has oak flooring through both and an oak fire surround (natural, varnished not stained), brushed steel gas fireplace and black marble hearth.

It's quite a dark room so was thinking light grey tones, but unsure how that will marry with the oak throughout. Charcoal furniture.

Any advice much appreciated.

Ooh Darzy I like your thinking. Actually the curtains are taupe and a nearly mint green - not stripes more they blend into each other (see pic). But if I got some art picking out those 2 colours that could work. I love teal but not sure about it on this wall. Maybe coral could be nice or is that too on trend? I also have an old chair I need to get reupholstered and was struggling for ideas for that. But a floral pattern with the green and taupe from the curtains and a third colour that matches the art could work well - ideas, ideas, ideas!Thank you Houzzers I knew you'd help me to look at this differently.

Hi---ok, so you have some different styles going on, but I think it could come together-just needs some balance with color, pattern, and a touch of whimsy... :) The wallpaper (w/owl) is a good color to incorporate into the space-works well with the sectional, dining table, and floor. The art pulls the color palette together, is contemporary with organic/circular shapes---relates to both the sectional and table designs. Pillows-masculine and feminine balanced-color palette repeated. Check BM's Seattle Mist and Brushed Aluminum for wall color. Hope this is helpful. Hi, this is a tricky one! I tell you the trend for 'grey's is frying my brain cell currently! It's very hard to make greys go with brown's because in a nutshell, they don't. Grey is a cool colour and brown is warm. Therefore, trying to get the mix right is a nightmare. If you're stuck on the midnight silver, which is a pretty colour, i'd probably have to go with painting the fireplace in the same, midnight silver, but darkening down the alcoves with a darker yet warm grey. Go for the same darker grey on the mantle shelf itself. The bricks would also have to be very dark, as painted bricks can look a little weird. When i paint bricwork, i choose not to paint the grouting. Instead i get a big pallette of similar looking colours, matchpots are good for this because you can buy 6 or 7 for a pound each at B&Q, then i stipple the paint onto the bricks so that they aren't one uniform colour, i've painted concrete to look like brick in this manner, it's very effective. If I were you i'd go for grey tones on the wall that look more taupe as they will sit better with your flooring which is a lovely warm tone. By going with the 'is it grey / is it taupe' colour scheme you will not end up with the cool greys competing with the floor.

I love your room, but it isn't done! Find some jazzy art to hang over the fireplace in vibrant colors. Select a major and minor color from the art work and add pillows, and 3 accessories that are LARGE to place on three places in the book shelves. If you like what you see at that point you are probably done, but if not then I think a glass and steel cocktail table round or oval would add sparkle, interest, and function to your room.....it really looks nice.

Do you know which aspect the room faces? Colours can look very different in various rooms. My friend has F&B Ammonite in her cloakroom which is quite dark and it looks very fresh in there. It’s a pale grey.

The front of the house faces north east. I'll definitely have a look at the Ammonite. Thank you!

Do you like green at all? My living room faces north east and I painted it in F&B Cromarty which is a pale grey-green.

Green is not a colour I'd usually go to, but green grey could be ok. I'll have a look into that one too.
It's quite a dark room because the long living-dining room leads into a conservatory, so the dining rooms windows are all now internal.

I was also going to suggest Cromarty. I have it in my office at home. Greens go well with oak colours so a green colour would look best IMO.
