Farrow & Ball Railings shaker kitchen colour scheme help!

Hi,

We’ve recently installed a shaker kitchen in Railings, with chrome handles. I can’t work out what colour to paint the walls or mantle. It’s a kitchen/dining/living room.

Walls currently Little Greene Linen Wash 33 as I thought the trade Matt white looked cheap but now I miss the coolness of it and think the room looks too cream.

I don’t want the mantle Railings as I don’t want it to look too heavy. I want a slightly luxurious but liveable style a bit Humphrey Munson-esque I suppose?

The room is SW facing. Flooring is a neutral oak plan. Planning to build a large tv cabinet wall in a light grey (Cornforth? Purbeck stone? Advice welcome!) down the other end of the room. Do we match the mantle to this??

Hi - the very same thing.

Every white/grey/black/‘neutral’ paint belongs to a measurable, identifiable Hue Family which can be plotted upon the Color Strategist Color Wheel above.

Plus all the details regarding Value (lightness), Chroma (colourfulness), Hue (Family) & location within that family.

It’s a great way to compare the similarities & differences between colours.

Should perhaps have said that the worktops are CRL Verona so a creamy grey veined quartz, could pick out the grey from this perhaps?

Hi - if you really want a close connection to your worktop, a contemporary way of working this out, is to measure the colour of the grey veining & the Quartz, with a smalll cevice called a Color Muse. (Approx £55 on Amazon)

It will give you key colour attributes of any surface you place it upon.

(Except hi-sheen metallic/glass)

It’s a little like taking a digital photo, as the app wirelessly links to your phone.

It takes seconds.

The results tell you to which Hue Family the colours belong. (Particularly useful when working with any neutral colours as rhey aren’t always easily identifiable)

The reason this is of fabulous use, is that it allows you to create colour harmonies with confidence. You aren’t guessing details of a colour.

It tells you how light or dark it is.

It tells you how colourful or near neutral it is.

It uses the same science & technology paint stores use to make, mix & match paint.

Now it’s available to homeowners too.

On a simple level, the app will give you near match paint colours. Or you can send the data to a Colour Strategist like me, to interpret and make suggestions.

It would still be necessary to test colours in your space to see how your light affects them.

Near neutrals such as those you mentioned, are far more prone to colour shift than more colourful colours.

I've looked at some of the items you've added to your ideabook, but could you give some idea as to where you lean? warm yellows, hot pinks, moss greens? I'm seeing all of these, but not sure. Valspar and Benjamin Moore both have no- and low-VOC paints. I'd start there.

Hi. I would try and go for a cohesive look throughout the house so it flows. Maybe choose a few colours for the walls that work together which could be different shades of grey for example (no pun intended!) or another neutral colour. Have a look at farrow and ball for inspiration as they make suggestions for colour matches. Paint all your ceilings and woodwork throughout in the same colour. Then pick accent colours for each room. Again these could be colours that work together. Have a look at a colour wheel to see what colours work together. As your living area is open plan you definitely need the colours to work together. If you chose a grey for example you could have an accent wall in a darker shade. I hope that helps. I didn't follow this for my old house but did for my new one and it does make a big difference.

Hello Orla, I love your Kitchen, you have nice fitting, stunning floor and lots of space! Have you got a splash back already? If not, what are you thinking to add, if you are? With those cabinets some glass panel would look nice and you could pick a colourful one as well. Walls painted in white would look quite flat and boring in your case so I would definitely go for a warm colour or maybe off yellow, that would suit your cabinets colour and the floor too. Knowing to which Hue Family your work surface belongs + other attributes, would give you opportunity to make colour selections which harmonise, without guesswork.

Alternatively, Railings belongs to the Purple-Blue Hue Family.

Purbeck Stone, Cornforth White and Ammonite all belong to the complementary

Hue Family of Yellow. So they all have the potential of being lovely pairings with Railings.

But I can’t stress strongly enough how important it is to test them in your space before finalising your decision. (Not directly on to the walls, but 2 coats on board or lining paper so that you may move them around.) Particularly note how they appear in any more dimly lit areas.

Once you plot a colour on the wheel, we can use the geometry of the wheel to find complementary colours, (opposite sides) analogous pairings (near neighbours), etc etc

Thanks so much for all the advice.

I am worried it may be too dark if I do the walls in one of the grey tones, is it acceptable to have the mantle in Purbeck Stone, to go with the TV cabinetry and then walls white or does the mantle need to match the kitchen units?

I think I would keep the mantle whichever colour you choose for the walls. Matching the Railings would create a dark stripe across the wall, cutting it in half visually.

I would want a softer effect, allowing whatever I place on the mantle (trailing plant etc) to be a little focal point.

Sounds good! If you find they colour shift unexpectedly in your space and you don’t like it, let me know and we will find alternatives.

(It certainly doesn’t happen in every room, but it may.)

Hi Poppy,

Regarding the mantle shelf, they are usually painted the same as the furniture, so it connects everything. I understand to think of it, its seems like a stripe but it does work.

Also to help with the dark kitchen cabinets, you definitely need a colour to add the depth and give balance. White will be too stark I would think and as another option to the Purbeck direction, you could try something like Skylight that works amazingly well with Railings

I also think the mantle is part of the furniture, it looks it, it has the same cornice etc, so I do think it should be same colour as the units....

Mantle should be in railings too. The whole scheme will look better once you match it with the rest of the kitchen furniture

I used Railings on the walls with my black units and love it. I kept the expanse of the ceiling clear of hanging lights and even had an expensive Faber extractor that disappears into the base units -to avoid clutter the ceiling. I also kept the floor expansive and clear with 1200mm concrete tiles. Thus compensated for the dark walls.

I would be tempted to do the mantle and the inside space equally dark with tiles that blend.

I think part of the problem is that I don’t actually like dark colours, I much prefer light and bright but my husband really wanted the dark units. I’ve not had time yet to go and get the testers, hopefully tomorrow!

It may be he's after rich colours - not necessarily just dark...

Certainly to my eyes a lot of these subtle colours and paints seem to have no colour at all.

You might be able to find the sweet spot of a light colour thats still rich/deep it itself so works for both of you. (Not sure if that makes any sense)?

After all that, we have decided to go back to white. We’re going for Snow by Neptune so it’s very slightly warmer than white. Thanks for all the suggestions and help!

I have a SW facing kitchen with Railings shaker cabinets, chrome handles and a white quartz countertop. Our walls are in Laura Ashley 'pale silver', which is a colour that shifts between very pale blue/lavender and pale grey depending on the light. It picks up the blue/purple of the cabinets and is particularly nice on cloudy days. I've had it 3 years and planning to repaint in the same colour again.
