white gloss bannisters

Hi guys ,I’m about to move in to a house with white gloss painted stair bannisters 😩 really don’t like gloss .
Is there any product I could use to have maybe a nice Matt look ,in a different colour ? Or am I going to have to sand it off 😱 really not that bored with life ! Thanks in advance x

I reckon you’re going to have to sand it off in one way or another. Any new paint will at the very least need to adhere to the gloss.

Lol, Sian. I was so bored with life, I actually sanded our bannister, removing all the (yellowed) gloss, gave it an undercoat and then two coats of eggshell paint.

That worked. 😊

I think I made a mistake- I have painted the railing and trim of the stairs in brilliant white - high gloss while doors to dining/living room in eggshell off-white (color grand - almost white). A runner will go up the stairs... (the runner is off white - beige color). Is there a way or would you recommend to change the color of the stairs and trim and dado rail to same color as dining/living room doors and trim around them?

All oil based paint yellows, but it has little to do with heat. The paint makers over the years have had to refine the chemicals so as not to cause health problems, things like lead used to be common place but have now been made near extinct. The advantage is that there's no hidden surprises in the paint, the bad news is it now yellows quickly. Providing the satinwood and gloss are both oil based I don't see why he would recommend one over the other when they are both essentially going to yellow. I would keep an eye on him as the difference between satinwood and gloss is that satinwood is self undercoating...meaning less time spent undercoating and preparing so it makes his job a little easier. If you don't want it to yellow use water based but the finish isn't anywhere as good as you would get with oil based

You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Maybe it's the black that's the problem not the wood at all

Ok E.D so a light sanding would do maybe .? Hope so thanks guys

Yes you don’t need to remove all the gloss paint you just need to remove any bumps of paint and provide a key for the paint you choose to replace it.
After sanding wipe off any dust for a better paint finish.
