Navy or Two Tone kitchen dilemma!
Opinions wanted!!
We are planning to knock through our kitchen, dining room & hallway walls to create on open eating / cooking space.
Our house is Scandinavian in design from the outside (quite boxy with lots of yellow pine!), & I wanted to keep a modern Scandi theme on the inside.
I have been drawn to navy kitchens from the start, but now I am worried this may be too dark for our West-facing room - we need to have the lights on for most of the day.
When researching online I have come across some lovely oak / navy two tone kitchens.
However, I’m not sure I like this design as much as the navy - see CAD designs attached.
Is my room too dark for navy, or too small for two tone?
I would have white quartz worktops & oak effect Amtico flooring...which is proving harder to match with oak units!
The last photo show the true colours of the navy & wood unit doors, along with a flooring option (The CAD design colours are not a true reflection).
The wood doors aren’t available in j-pull, so I have opted with handleless design & dark grey rails for both colours in the kitchen.

Comments (28)Ok - currently saving money on carpet; already have pool table and lamp for this area. What about creating different seating areas in the room. You said there are built ins? Computer station? Family using this space. Here is MY suggestion: I would use MORE than one rug - each for specific areas of this room. You can have the sisal berbers made to fit - and I think ONE large one would actually end up being a little messy as this would be huge - and could get off bounds? (out of shape) You could have these bound and use them to create different areas within the larger space? Is that a gold or a taupe or beige color between the red pattern? Here is my suggestion : the opposite side of the color wheel tones down the other - since this is a red color - how about using a very soft BLUE/GREY on the ceiling? Or a very soft Grey/Blue? And a very soft taupe or mocha color on the walls - something which is within the SAME tonal family as the NON-red portion of your rug? This should go nicely with your brown sofa and the sisal or other type berbers? YES - get one larger one (RUG for the area in front of the TV . . . large enough to go from the baseboard area - to completely under your sofa? BTW - LAZYBOY makes beuatiful furniture - and you do NOT have to get the plumped and rolled ubiquitious leather chair. OR, I can personally, highly recommend FurnitureLa South, in Hickory N.C. - and they will deliver for FREE! Love that! They have a style for everyone and this is where they actually make the furniture. They sell ALL manufacturers at cost. Well not Lane or Ethan Allen. My one last thought - since this is such a very large space - I would also get a rather substantial and DARK drapery rod using finials - and extend the width of the drapes to help balance the room on the other side with the windows. Since you have built ins on the other side - this will help balance the space visually. IF you do not like the color of the fixture material on the pool table light - you can get any finish you desire in a rustoleium paint - I would consider spray painting this something in the neighborhood of a oil rubbed bronze; or something with more of a dark patina? This would also help balance out the room and bring focus into the space you are utilizing - the rest will fade away. SO - ceiling paint a must; paint the trim or add a more traditional trim - at least 5 inches in depth; TWO separate rugs - not one big one - at least one for now for the TV area; Extend your drapes and raise them almost to the ceiling to help balance the room; Darker drape rod - and double the fabric for your drapes to make them look fuller; Spray paint a darker finish on to the pool table fixture. Use a tone of paint on the wall which will go with the tone of the other color of your rug! Another thought: You consider finding an old wooden bench - or church pew ??? that would be fun; you could place facing into the space around the pool table area? Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. Comments (5)You should probably think of the floor covering in the overall plan as a light colour or dark colour may have an impact on whether you choose a light or dark colour for the worktop. Two different worktops, one on the island and one on the rest of the units might look well too. I like timber for an island but only if you don't need the worktop to be heat resistant and it's not near the sink. We've picked a dark grey for our island and will probably choose an off white worktop with a vein in it to contrast with it. Good luck with your decisions!...See More

3 years agoI think I would go for wood and white or palest grey units, or just white/grey with a wood effect floor, or wood units and a pale floor, so there’s no clash. As you only get good light late afternoon wouldn’t the navy be rather dark? Scandi to me means light and warm wood. I’m not sure the navy will give you that lightness? Here’s a few ideas, the first is navy and wood which I think is heavy and dark.

3 years agoIf you love navy blue kitchens, go for it. Seriously, if that's what you see in your mind when you 'look' at your kitchen, you need to go for a navy kitchen or you might regret it. We all have our opinions, but it is not our kitchen. If you can, take colour samples home with you and look at them in the kitchen space. They will look very different in the light of your home than they will in the showroom.
The white countertops will reflect light. The wooden floor will give it warmth.
You could have the tall cabinets in white or a very light greyish colour. But if you've always wanted an all navy kitchen, go for navy.
Go for as many drawers as you can get in the design, for practical storage.
I'll include photos of lighter tall cabinets. Don't think: but those kitchens are much lighter spaces, because you don't know what's photoshopped.
