Hi, you can add photos in the comments as you can’t edit posts (the vagaries of Houzz!). Open a comment, type any text, then you will see a camera and another icon next to it which you can click on and it will ask where you want to go to get photos, click on your choice which will take you to your photos. Just select the photos you want to upload (up to 4), click next. Then click on Post below in green. Hope that makes sense?

Our living room is a cosy size, about 15x15. It has a large window on one wall, fireplace on the opposite (will be a cream cast iron traditional style fireplace). I was thinking of painting it a very mellow sage green but am at a loss with what curtains to put in.

i have to decide on the type of sliding aluminium doors to put in. There is 900euro difference between lift and slide or ordinary sliders. The entire double slider is approx 3.5M i.e approx 1.75M per door. Just one door sliding back on a fixed pane. Has anyone got advice for me? Is there so much of a difference to warrant the extra cost? The windows come with a 15 year guarantee. Thanks in advance for any advice, Anne

Hiya We recently moved into our new apt. both bedrooms are north facing so I'm looking for ideas for colours. we have a black leather framed bed & I've picked out 2 bed side lockers which are wood with black drawers and 2 bedside lamps with a copper stand, our wardrobe is not the standard built in type...the wardrobe door is basically a normal room door if you know what I mean. Its pretty spacious and I'm conscious while filling space I don't want to clutter it. Our living area is painted Oxford white and my other half wants to use this in the bedroom...but I think it would he weird to paint the bedrooms the same colour as the living area. Would love to hear ideas as lacking inspiration right now!

I think your room is lovely and I like the warm reds and mustards. I notice you have the dreaded vertical blinds in the window. They always have an officey look to me so I would change them either for Roman blinds, or some wooden slatted blinds and then curtains on the outside. Keep the colours muted (similar to your walls) so you don’t have colour overload. Although I do feel a soft mustard would look very cosy. I also think the rug is too small and it looks a bit lost.. Ideally your sofa legs, at the least the front ones, should sit on the rug. I would choose a more neutral pallet such as a pale grey or beige for the rug, and I think those lovely faded look rugs would be ideal. A patterned rug will be fine as long as it is calm and soothing, if you get my drift. How do you feel about adding some colour to the walls, or just a feature wall? Green or navy would be nice. F&B Inchyra Blue combines that rather nicely. Here’s some ideas

Thanks for you ideas Sonia. I always hated venetian blinds cos they are dust traps so maybe Roman blinds. I like your idea about the rug being bigger and I do think my current one has had it's day. I'm not sure that a green or navy feature wall would make the room feel warmer and have avoided curtains to try to let as much light in as possible 🤔. You had definitely given me food for thought which is very much appreciated. Thanks again

Yes the dark shades aren’t for everyone. With the curtains, if you have the rail wider than the window by about 8-10” either side, the curtains will not block the light when pulled back. I’m glad it’s given you ideas and hopefully you will get more comments soon.

A large mirror can help a room feel larger and brighter if you have wall space available.

Hi Elly,

I agree with Sonia's comments above about keeping things neutral.

The only rule of thumb with North facing rooms and colour is you can go two ways:

One - counterbalance the cool light with paint colours that have yellow or warmer undertones like pinks, reds - so stay away from cool greys, grey-blues, (Farrow and Ball do give you detailed information on their website and most paint shops will advise you too - you may well be able to tell yourself ) and this will really help a great deal. Even a white paint with yellow undertones will help so you don't have to go all out bold colour, it just relates to the pigments if that makes sense.

Two: The other option is to embrace the cool light and go all out bold colour as Sonia suggested with the lovely blue and allow it to be a moody, dramatic space.

I know designer paints can stretch budgets a bit but the quality of the colours on the walls really do change a space so do consider these if you are going to paint a wall.

I have a west facing room (very cool, grey lighting) in the house here, so we used Mittens by Earthborn and it looks fab! We paired it with a really warm, subtle sophisticated green paper just on one wall - nope the feature wall idea is not out if you echo it throughout the room and it looks as though it belongs) for my 11 yr old as he wanted an "army" bedroom. The Mittens colour really stops it ever feeling gloomy. We put in some great feature lighting from Industville which has a lovely brass lining feature inside the shade which casts a gorgeous light in the evenings and in the day time as the light bounces off the brass colour - and bob's your uncle, a really inviting space.

It's all about using the light to your advantage.

If you could lighten your sofa's a bit that will really lift the room too - perhaps with throws?

I definitely agree with Sonia about sizing up the rug. John Lewis do some fantastic rugs - you may have heard of them. They are Louis de Poortere -mad men rugs. Absolutely fantastic abstract designs that will create a focal point. Nourison do some similar designs you might like.

Try and think of a room as a story. Your eyes will be drawn where there is a lot of contrast so in this case- the sofas are the darkest objects so this is what you notice first, which is close to the floor which is grey and will reflect the cooler light so a more neutral warm toned rug (which can still have warm greys and a few of your cushion colours perhaps in it to tie in with the flooring) will really brighten and boost the space without being overpowering. Then this colour in the centre being more subtle will help you notice the cushions and then as Sonia mentioned, adding curtains will warm up and draw your eyes upwards where you want them to be too.

Textures add warmth just as much as pattern and colour.

Trial and error is usually the best way!
