Painting Small Area Laminate Floor

Hello,

I've got a small galley kitchen with laminate (wood effect) flooring. It's really ugly and marked and I'd like to be able to paint it, rather than get new flooring but my research shows this is generally not recommended! However, as a runner covers the majority of the floor, it doesn't get much direct footfall and as it's such a small space, I'm wondering if I could get away with it.

I'd love to get people's thoughts and/or recommendations!

Painted floors are not very hardwearing and I personally wouldn’t do it.

Hi, we would recommend a new laminate flooring as painted floors often create more work than they are worth! With a space that small you could get laminate from our website for £5.49 per meter!

I have to join this discussion of Hardwood in the kitchen. I am a little biased in this discussion because of being a tile contractor for almost 30 years. I have seen alot of hardwood kitchen floors. I have to give you the cons of putting hardwood in. Hardwood floors look great. As far as durability I am not sold. Hardwood floors look great when they are first put in. Depending on the traffic in the kitchen I give them about 4 to 5 years is when you see significant wear. I have seen alot of hardwood floors in kitchens with water damage. Now I know you think you wont have a leak from your dishwasher, refrigerator or a general plumbing leak. Well these things do happen and when it does the hardwood needs to be totally removed. Some times this is not so easy if the hardwood goes under the base cabinets. I am not saying do not put hardwood in the kitchen I think you should look at whats going to work for you. There are plenty of porcelain tiles that will give you the look of hardwood but give you the durability of a porcelain tile. Tile installed properly will last a long time. Hardwood will last but it will look warn to the point that it would need to be refinished at a cost around $2000.00 depending on the size of the room. I don't want to upset the hardwood floor lovers I have it all over my house except the bathrooms and kitchen. The floor is 20 years old 4 kids 2 dogs and still looks great. I am sure what ever you choose it will look great.

We put tile in our kitchen, dining room, pantry, laundry area, entry hallway and coat closet as it flows together last winter. We're very happy with it after having water damage our vinyl plank floor. The only issue we have with the tile is that it's slippery for our two older dogs, but they love lying on it in the summer. I have 2 area rugs in my L shaped dining room along with several throw rugs and and runner in the other areas to provide them with traction, and they do okay. We haven't found it to be cold unless we're having a cold spell, and then it's a bit chilly, but otherwise it's fine. We live north of Seattle. My in-laws put in laminate a few years ago, and my husband says the noise of their dogs toenails on it drives him crazy. It looks very nice though.

Hi. Your kitchen to me looks large, certainly big enough for a table and maybe some seating (from what I can see in the pic anyway!). I personally wouldn't knock through unless rooms were small and needed space for furniture. I cook a lot and would hate the smell travelling, the noise and the mess etc. if the house has 2 living areas it's also nice for family members to have their own space at times. That's just my opinion though and what works for me and not you! ! Have you looked at pics where people have done the same thing with similar size rooms? Or is there anyone in the road with a similar house? Re paint, are you painting the units or just the walls? I would probably change the kitchen floor regardless if you knock through as its absorbing some of the light.

And also there is some original tile left and I was toying with the idea of tiling over that strip all the way to the wall to create a small corridor of tile as you come in the front door for the 'hallway' that once was, to add interest and a sense of separation between kitchen and hall because the door opens into the kitchen directly which isn't ideal (we had to do away with a small pocket door and partition wall there.) and then do the rest in marmoleum. Would this look weird or should I just do the marmoleum throughout?

Hi, I painted a wood floor (not laminate) in my previous flat with F&B floor paint. I loved it, BUT it did chip and it needs a week (!) to dry/cure properly, and you’re not meant to put furniture/ walk on it in that time. The upside is that you can go v dramatic on the colour! I would say go for it, although new laminate is probably the sensible option...
