Can I paint the back of this house?

Hi,

When we purchased our house, the kitchen needed some paint work done to it. The internal wall was plaster, so I got some sealant and kitchen paint and that's come up lovely.

However, externally I'm not sure how to tackle it. I want to paint it a colour, but there is a material on the rear of the property that I am not familiar with, like some kind of concrete render.

Couple questions:

Do you know what it is?
Can I paint over it as it stands, or does it need some kind of sealant or other treatment done to it first?
What is the best paint to use for this? An external textured paint, for example?

I've attached some photos which hopefully show clearly what the wall is made of. Hope you can help!

He says it’s render and can be painted with masonry paint.

Consider going with tone on tone textured tiles. Keep it classical. Sometimes you can introduce a slightly darker contrasting grout color to accentuate the tile shape or design. The new trend is moving away from the subway tile look, it might date the kitchen in a short period of time. I would select your back splash tile before selecting the paint color. Paint colors I always select last, it is what pulls everything together.

I recommend glass subway tile as a backsplash in a staggered pattern. It comes in amazing variety of colors. Take several samples home to see how they work with your granite. Your choices sound quite beautiful so trust your gut.

I would go for a stone colour so not too dissimilar to what you've got. Little Greene does a good stone colour too but will work out a bit expensive. This is Oxford stone by farrow and ball. If you were doing the windows and front door then maybe an old white with door and windows in french grey

Neutral paints for whole house

Hello 9woodview, Have a look at Little Greene, They do a fantastic range of chalky paints for walls and woodwork.. Whitening is a gr8 one for ceilings and then there's a whole range of neutral colours to choose from that can add contrast, compliment and look bold and vivid at the same time.. Even with more subtle colours you can still create an impact. They have a few brighter colours that might not spring to mind with the word neutral! Think of the furnishings and accessories like mirrors etc that will also add to it.. Smaller pieces can add a lot to the look and feel of a room.. Once you have decided on a colour scheme.. I would suggest no more than 3 per room and if you want to create a flow between the house you could compliment the colours in slightly different ways or tones throughout.. Adding things to emphasise will help to lift lighter colours.. Consider golds, woods and lovely mirrors or pictures.. :)) http://www.littlegreene.com/paint/colour/neutral-paint

Hi @Sonia

Thanks so much for your reply and for your answer.

As you can see in the first picture, around the tap area there are some darker patches. Does your stepson happen to know if this is damp or anything we should be worried about, and if so, anything he recommends we do for it? Or all good just to paint over with masonry paint?

He’s not sure. It may be damp and maybe the outside tap pipe is leaking?

Thanks @Sonia, we'll take a closer look at the plumbing and make sure it's all proper before doing the paint job. Really appreciate your help.
