I think you're making great progress. CDR wanted you to put them all vertical because she thinks only professionals should style bookcases. We are/were all amateurs at one point, that doesn't mean we shouldn't decorate our own homes. You're getting there! Just keep studying the photos of bookshelves that you like and keep practicing. Just remember to keep the decorations simple. Look over the beautiful photo above from Maureen again, and you can see that some shelves are still all books, and there are only a few decorative pieces.

Hello Cork2015, Looking like a very tidy home... I like the black on brick and its lovely to have a difference in texture that the brick offers, rather than all render which would not be as appealing I feel.....What about considering painting the window sill on the ground level black, this will blend nicely with the sliding doors.. The eye is not drawn to it either... Then you might want to add some plants in large pots... 2 square metal planters with something nice in could be lovely either side of the sliding doors.. possibly two pots under the window too... They work in a variety of settings not just period homes.. Have a look at these ideas.. : )) A line along the aggregate could be lovely... 2 more either side of the sliding doors and two under the window... Lovely and easy! 2 either side of the front door down the side... (if less light they could be artificial there)

I have to agree with nudejude regarding the upholstered furniture sizes and positions. The room looks long and narrow, so placing 2 chairs or a 2 seater sofa opposite another 2 seater would allow you to enter through the door and walk, unrestricted, through to the opposite end of the room. An area rug between the sofas, large enough to fit under their front legs and perhaps a clear coffee table in glass or Perspex between would make a great conversation area. There may be enough length to the room to use a console table behind the sofa nearest the double doors with 2 small occasional chairs. A pair of lamps would provide light for the sofa and for the chairs. If the chairs are needed, they can be brought into the main conversation grouping. A Roman blind, with or without the curtains, would set off the window. Throw cushions in a variety of patterns and colour, will add interest to the upholstered pieces. Good luck and enjoy your home.

It might be an idea to get a local arboriculturist to assess the trees before planting anything. If they've not been looked at for a while there may be some thinning, branch removal, felling to be done. They will also advise if any have disease. Then see what you have left. Some thinning can increase light levels and moisture enabling you to plant more varieties of plants and create character areas in the garden. Shade areas with ferns or sunny glades. Japanese azaleas work well on the fringe. Swathes of cyclamen look beautiful. Generally, large swathes of the same plant looks more natural, as it gives the appearance the plant has colonised naturally.
