Design Dilemma Bathrooms

I want to find a bathroom sink that has an integral soap dish.

All the modern sinks seem to have flat surfaces and so you need a soap dish and with that goes soggy soap! The older sinks had a soap area with ridges which allowed the water to drain away and kept the soap from going soggy. With the move away from plastics and bottled soap we should be encouraging the use of bars of soap again.

Lots of us still use bar soap as it hopefully reduces plastic waste. I’m going to revert to a magnetic soap holder when I renovate my bathroom. Something like this.... https://www.thegreenhead.com/2012/02/kikkerland-magnetic-soap-holder.php

Soap dishes needn‘t mean soggy soap... the best ones have ridges or raised spots on the bottom so the soap isn’t sitting in any water that’s collected. Agree with you about bar soap, we have never moved away from it!

If you don’t have any luck finding one, then couple of alternate ideas ...

Coconut soap dish - we use one and no soggy soap (plus you can use any soap left on it to scrub your hands!)

Or

A wall mounted soap holder with drainer just above the sink so it drains over the sink. Not ideal but an alternative

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

I think it looks great so far. Many of the ads for claw foot tubs, and magazines, show them with encaustic/cement tile and plain white surround. Also, you did something creative and attractive with the tile layout. I love the nickel shine of your clawfoot legs too. If you can maybe get a corner shelf on one side of the wall, you'll have a place for soap, candle or bubble bath. And maybe hotel towel holder on another wall to get the height up. Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Do people still use soap in a tablet form? It’s horrid stuff. Not gentle at all on the hands and a pain when wearing jewellery.

I think it'll be easier for you to find a soap dish that drains into the sink, I don't think modern sinks are made like that anymore. You could check out a salvage/reclaim yards near you and try and find a older sink that's still in good nick. Otherwise, there are some really nice soap dish options. Have a look on Etsy or Not on the High Street for something a bit different.

Agree with Jonathan - lots of choice on auction sites and mostly reclaimed so absolutely the best choice in terms of environmental impact. (Also from a cost point of view too!). There’s also a few new traditional styles that have soap draining areas (from what I can see, they are mainly recessed areas that have a draining point, so not strictly a soap dish). Heritage is just one brand that have several models that might fit the bill. Sadly I think all options are more traditional styles. If you want a more contemporary look, there’s loads of nice soap dishes on the market.

Kohler do this sink....but it's soooo expensive. Know what you mean about the soap - we use bar soap too and love it - there are so many chemical free, lovely soaps around these days and no plastic! We currently use a simple bamboo soap dish. Or you could perhaps think about a soap on a roap?

Or a classic French option of a rotating soap option which is wall mounted

This isn't such a big deal tho cause there are many alternatives to various soap dishes. You can also make a custom sink with a built-in soap dish for your convenience.

I use a bamboo soap dish with slits so the soap never goes soggy.
also like these little ideas from pinterest, if you’re at all crafty these would be easy to make with some air-dry clay and varnish

very surprised how many people are anti-soap bar, it’s such a simple thing we can all use to contribute to a world with less plastic. (I also highly recommend shampoo bars and conditioner bars, there’s so many available now, and makes for a very tidy shower with just 3 soap dishes and no bottles!)

I got my magnetic soap holder 😁. It’s not particularly beautiful (but neither is my bathroom yet) but it is very, very practical. Our soap was always soggy before, even though our sink is old and had a drainage channel. Now it’s always dry and ready to use. This holder was dirt cheap from Amazon. It’s not screwed on (it could be - the holes are there), just stuck with the sticky pad it came with, but it seems secure.
As for good old bar soap I wonder how many people realise just how fantastic it is as a bacteria killer. It’s unlikely that any could linger on it.

Try Broken Bogs in Hampshire they have a wide variety of vintage sinks with integrated textured soap trays or new products inspired by the vintage styling. They also have a lovely range of colour ways to fit in with all interior design solutions.
