Suggestions for front wall / garden
Hi,
We have a front driveway that is pretty characterless. It is a simple low wall and a brick driveway with no planting to soften its appearance.
I am looking for any suggestions as to how to make the front more attractive. I assume i will beed to lift some bricks so i can put in some plants.
There is a triangular section, approx 5m along the front wal and 2 to 3m along the boundary that is never driven on and can be used for planting. I hop the photos below make things clear!
PS, if you have any more (low budget!) suggestions for making the front of the house more attractive i am all ears.

3 years agoI think it’s great that you want to add some greenery. Is the flower bed in sun or shade, or a mixture, as this will dictate what you could plant there? If it has a good amount of sun you could plant lavender, Nepeta, Hardy Geraniums and even a low growing creeping rose like The Fairy. For a bit of winter greenery Hebes are lovely evergreen ball shaped small shrubs with purple or white flowers. I think a bit of height in the middle would look good peeping over the front wall such as a Shrub Rose or a dwarf cherry or apricot tree which grow to about 10’ max.

It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. Comments (25)Hi lots of different options and ideas going on. I had a similar wall and understand how mean it can be to little ones. I bought and put up the expanding wood trellis. This instantly covered the area at a very reasonable price. I then planted quick growing climbing plants. Comments (2)It feels bland because floors and walls are beige. (ish). If you want to make a statement about a room. contrasting shades work really well. You have spotlights so the south aspect is irrelevant. Put a dimmer on spots if not already there so you control the light and feel of a room. I presume the fire is staying there so that back wall would be perfect for TV to be put on/entertainment system. Corner couch facing tv wall with chaise lounge on fire side. 3 years agoSo you could remove some of the block pavers, remove the sand then dig in some compost to improve the soil. For privacy you could plant some evergreen shrubs like Viburnum tinus which has winter flowers, Choisya ternata sundance which has golden leaves and white flowers and Ceanothus which has lovely blue flowers in May. You could add one or two taller roses for some summer colour. Not very formal I’m afraid as I just can’t do formal! In order first is Viburnum, Choisya, Ceanothus, a Rose.

3 years agoHi rapscalli, while I can't give you any planting advice, just so you know you wouldn't be able to use the streetlight as support. It will be council owned and maintained by a contractor who would remove anything attached to it. Wouldn't want any costly or loved plant damaged! Are you able to put up some light fencing or supports for a climber? Something like this only not so tall so a climber has some support, and would cover it in time?

3 years agoOne option to avoid digging up the paving is to put raise beds on top, you can buy ready made ones and fill with soil for planting up - like these ones we have put in an area of our garden this year, you can get them in various shapes (Harrod Horticulture Website) and sizes so could get and L shape to go along the side and corner you are looking at. If you want evergreen Portuguese Laurel is nice and I think a large climber or tree in a planter would like nice against the house.

3 years agoWould something like this work? Built from simple sleepers. I drilled the concrete underneath multiple times to improve drainage. The fence is an original from the 50’s so just restored I it’s original blue colour and the frame filled in with simple timber that has been stained.

3 years agoDwarf Japanese maples are beautiful in structure and colour (particularly the red ones) along with some purple flowering hebe and leave room at the front for either lavender and/ or bedding plants.
