Should I/how to add curtains?

I would love to throw up some curtains in my living room whilst waiting to decorate, but have no idea how to do it!

Is it better to wait? Three separate poles? One which wraps around?? It's a pretty interesting window and hard to find inspiration.

Trying to avoid drilling into the wood if I can, pretty sure it's the original for the window (circa 1900).

No curtains, I find it takes away from the lovely windows. If your window is overlooked, perhaps Roman blinds for privacy if needed.

Window shopping and lots of online browsing.! .haven't purchased anything yet!. Just getting house back in order after painting! I have put back the red/winey curtains that I previously had up...convinces me more to go with a neutral colour. The walls are rich Taupe but with a slight grey hue off them so I think the bottom left above actually might work. I have bedding very similar so I took them out and held up and think it would look very nice. Purple isn't a theme in my house (although I do have one bedroom painted purple/lilac) My sitting room is white red black and silver and living/kitchen room is tan and red. I want a rug that wont show up the dirt that much...I live in the country side and have lots of dirty feet coming in so I cant go for any rug that is too light in colour

I'd definitely put some kind of stone on the walls, all the way to the ceiling. I think the gas fireplace that you have is really cute, but might look at a stone slab on the floor instead of the mat that is there now. I'd take stone inside of that alcove as well, whether matching or contrasting. You can still hang art above, on top of the stone. It would really make the room!

Hello there... I hope I can be of some help as I have almost an identical sitting room - I will just share with you my sitting room this year!! All the walls started out in Dulux Timeless colour so I wanted to add an accent colour- like you, I have one end of the room that is patio doors. So the opposite wall to those, I chose as an accent wall - I know a lot of people suggest not having an accent wall but perhaps having horizontal painted stripes of colour etc... But as I was doing the painting, I knew I would have made a real hash of that!! So the third pic is my first attempt at an accent wall - The Greene Paint company - colour Bassalt. This was nice but I just got bored of it - it worked well against the richness of the wood floor etc and was very much a statement but in a few months I just couldn't settle with it. After several coats of white I have now settled on Farrow & Balls colour Lamp Room Grey. I know this seems all very neutral, but from the second photo you will see I have gone for cream curtains with neutral vertical pom-poms - but, by doing all this, I can now change the accent colour in this room at the drop of a hat and quite importantly - INEXPENSIVELY! For instance, if I wanted to, for Xmas, if I was going to spend a lot of time in that room, I could a. Go for red and cream cushions and create a Scandinavian look! Or b. Go for silver beaded cushions and silver candle jars and have a winter wonderland look! And equally in the summer, I could go for pastel pink floral cushions and a vase of delicate roses to bring the garden into the sitting room or just keep it neutral with ivory roses and a hint of lime green. So my advice would be to keep the expensive things neutral and then you can alter the in expensive things as you go along. I also think one expensive piece in any room is a good investment - be it a huge oversized pewter bowl or a something similar - that again is neutral in colour but is a statement piece. There are a thousand ways to use mirrors beautifully in a living room -- just not any old mirror in any old place, that I would agree with I think you should have art over the fireplace, and I see potential for using a scattering of small mirrors to bring light into the alcove and counterbalance the somewhat awkward angle of the TV. I'm assuming there's nowhere else to put the TV? I agree that the furniture in that corner is rather too flimsy to handle either the size of the TV or the bold black boxes of the fireplace and hearth. How about a striking floor vase? Would you hang the blinds within the window recesses?

I will hang blinds if curtains won't work... I've always just thought curtains are softer, blinds always feel a bit definite to me? (I might just be mad though!)

I would have blinds within the recesses but also have some lovely curtains there to frame the bay and soften the look. The curtains woulsnt need to be used, just to make the bay look beautiful. I found some images but none of them are beautiful bays like yours.

What a beautiful window! I would definitely use roman blinds in the recesses to end at the bottom of the window.
While I think curtains can often be used around a bay, yours is much wider with a shallower angle than is typical and I wouldn’t use in this scenario.

Just my opinion but I think they would cut into the room too much.

I’m recommending blinds in the recess as I would not want to hide any of the woodwork.

It's a lovely window, in an amazing space but oh so awkward!

Such a beautiful classical room is crying out for roman blinds. Curtains would just cover up the lovely panelling on the sides of the windows.

Yes, i agree that recessed roman blinds would show off that fabulous panelling. But I’m wondering about your windows: judging by the hinges and handles it looks like the whole of each of the three windows open inwards, and are side hung? If so, you may need to fix any blinds directly to the opening sashes, so that they can still be opened...

oh you are absolutely correct! They do open inward. 4th story so safer that way.

I'll have to have a look at what can be attached to the window frame, assuming I can do this without damaging the windows.

Why not just obscure the bottom area with glass spray and a stencil, I assume you just need some privacy?

It is easy to do and should you wish for a change, remove and change the design👍

Little bit of privacy, but largely for us was the desire to insulate (cold weather/large windows!) and to block out some of the noise (busy road and a train station). None are huge problems though, so blinds will help to some degree.

Get interlined blinds, will make a big difference. You can fix blinds to the window frames.
I imagine you can’t wait to open the boarded up fireplace.

I might try out some cheap blinds and see how I get on with them.

I am so excited to pull off that board on the fireplace! I have no clue what's behind, I'm praying for the original but husband keeps reminding me to lower my expectations ha!
