Redesign garden economically
Hi. I'm looking for a cost effective easy maintenance solution for my existing concrete and paving back space. It won't be used much but it needs to look half decent. Not looking for paving or decking. The grass will stay.
Would slate gravel work on the whole area except the grass? I've had family members tell me fake grass would work best but I'm really not convinced!

I think that artificial lawn would work in the concrete area indeed. From the pictures, I'm not sure if the concrete and real lawn area are at the same level? If they are and you do decide to go with artificial lawn in the concrete area, it would be nice to lay some sort of a line of slabs between them. The real and artificial lawns will look different, so it is good to have some sort of a division between them, and not to lay them side by side.
Another alternative is to cover the concrete area with one of these modular tiles that are very easy to mount (you can easily do it yourself) and easy on the budget.

Comments (13)I have a tile roof, and they make going mod kind of difficult, but they do add charm.With the sort of earthy color scheme i posted before, you could paint the bricks with masonry paint in a paler tone like sw ancient marble or wash them with a more grayed green so they add taupe tones if you do the chimneys the same - but really, the color resonates with the roof, so use it as color inspiration. Look at 100 year old homes with lines like this and their window mullions - if the upper elements and sides of the larger picture window had muntins / grilles, they would be more charming. Still, you are aiming at retro farmhouse with the muntins, not necessarily authentic historic . . but that gives you some concept about how to go and search for inspiration. You don't have to tear out the entire ramp - could widen "pad/porch" to left and put stairs right down the front depending on car park / depth to roadway design - have your ramp and stairs and just take off the old handrail too . . great for universal design when selling tho railing is not attractive....See MoreiPad app to help with re-design of house and garden

Comments (74)Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. 3 years agoEverything is badly laid isn’t it? I would take up all the paving slabs, level the soil as best you can and turf it. The concrete area looks level but very cracked. Is it sturdy? If it’s sturdy you can put out a table and chairs (Gumtree is great for secondhand), then a few cheap plastic pots with bedding plants in for colour. I personally do not like fake grass, I don’t see the point, but that’s just me! I think concrete can make a very interesting patio and it can be stencilled or painted.
