Help with bathroom design

We have the following bathroom and separate WC.

Initial thoughts are to knock the wall down and make it one room.

Ideally we would like a walk in shower, bath, sink and toilet in one room.

we've considered just partially knocking the wall downs and placing the shower where the current WC is now.

It would be great to see what others think.

The floor plan is slightly wrong though, the wall which backs onto the stairs, actually sits in the centre of the door opposite. so we can't just build straight out off that wall to make a square room.

I forgot to add, we do have a WC under the stairs downstairs.

Do you have measurements?
If it will fit I would be tempted to put the bath on the same wall as the shower. If it will fit I would also add an extra wc in the bathroom and jeep the extra loo. I have the same arrangement and it is convenient to have two upstairs WCs

My understanding: You didn't find any problem functionally, but you feel this looks old & need some brightness & change in this. My advise: 1). Remove towel rod, shift it next to tub or behind closet & have full length mirror, which will make your space double & reflect natural light as well thus makes the space more bright. 2). Get couple of plants (small plants or bush type or creepers which doesn't occupy much space on floor but grows vertically). 3). Get some artifacts made from bright colored glass, can flower vase or wall hangings or glass tiles etc, these can be of yellow or Bright Orange color these are to be hung on walls opp to mirror or pasted(3M tape both side glued) if you are using tiles. 4). Get a mat of same color as artifacts & place between tub & closet. these all are easily done by yourself. OR if you can afford to then replace only green tiles & floor tiles if you wish to OR all tiles.

It small But your cabin sink unit is a good idea as you have storage space and it looks neat. I have changed my bath many times to shower unit and it has leaked every time, some times it has been the plumbers fault or bad design then it was a visitor who let the water spill while showering the last time it flooded the insurers wanted the bathroom TANKED! meaning waterproof walls and floors. This is done by an experienced plumber contractor of repute! as the insurers said too many claims from too many people with bad waterproofing. the insurer said they would not insure again or any other clients who had not got their bathroom water proofed by expert plumber fitters. SO I have gone back to the Bath with a shower enclosed and found it tops for waterproof.

I'm stuck choosing a paint color for one of my bathrooms. I always play it safe and realise I now live in beige land! Shower and floor tiles are a "greidge" color Wich I regret but are only in four years do I'm stuck with them, for now. As you can see splashback is a purple mosaic so should I pick a punchy color to tie that in??

no measurements just yet Jonathan :( we havent officially moved in yet.

My thoughts were to put the shower where the toilet is and then have the toilet in the wall which is the back of the new shower. and then we have the rest of the room to play with

Hi Scott,

I did a bathroom just like this a while back.

We enlarged the bathroom - adding a door right off the stairs into the bathroom to make one large room. This door opens into the bathroom but the opposite way to the current way the door opens - so the door ends up against the wall when fully open rather than floating in the room. With the door this way around, itt is now easier to enter a room and you waste less floor space with space you need to use to get a person around the open door.

Then we shaved off some of the wall between the toilet & the rest of the bathroom. By having a half wall, you feel like you maintain a bit of privacy in the toilet, gives you an extra wall to put plumbing into and place a sink again so your layout, and makes the room feel bigger.

New Layout:
- Put the sink where the bath is against the new 1/2 wall.
- Put the bath where the sink is - butting the bath up to the shower
- Keep the shower where the shower is, but with a portion of the internal bathroom wall gone next to the toilet and the door opening into the bath the opposite way, you can now increase the length / size of the shower to make it more comfortable. A custom glass enclosure will be more expensive for the shower (although you may be able to find one online that will work with the measurements of your space along with a shower trey), but it will be far less expensive than trying to move the toilet (new waste plumbing) and the other plumbing inlets & outlets which feed your sink, shower & bath in the bathroom.
- Tip - tile the entire room - floor & walls (floor to ceiling) - easier to clean, stays nicer for longer, and looks cohesive.
This plan will give you a luxurious proper functional bathroom that you will very much enjoy having.

Hi Scott,

Sorry - it was several years ago now. I am retired and it would take a great deal of effort to try and find those photos. Just a couple of things about the project though - we did the bathroom all white with silver metal fixtures and fittings and a statement mirror over the sink. The floor tiles were large white stone with mother of pearl accent tiles in between and the wall tiles were crisp white bevel-edged subway tiles with white grout. The whole look was crisp, clean, timeless and opulent without feeling too stark & clinical or gaudy glam. The room was stunning and the clients reported that it functioned like a dream - taking their once broken up w/c & bathroom and converting it into a luxurious family bathroom. Of course the layout can be done with any style and tile preference - this is just what we did.
