Garden Path Ideas

We have just had a new garden deck built and are now thinking about creating a path which continues from the top of the 'ramp' to the path at the side of the garden - following a similar line to what the small stepping stones do now. The garden to continues to slope gently upward beyond the ramp which makes things a little more challenging and we'd like to avoid gravel. The pavers will be removed at the top of the ramp so the new path will begin from the centre/parting board of the deck.

Is the whole deck sloped, is it just a big ramp or what is it for as it doesn't seem to connect a doorway to another level area? Confused!

Hi Ellie. The deck is flat and completely independent from the house. We have built it to create a raised patio area where an old greenhouse and useless sloped paving area sat. It is still work in progress - needs the sides cladding and a balustrade around the bottom end (near to the house) as the drop is quite high. It's just the garden that's slightly sloping. The 'ramp' is just the path which moves you from the lower patio to the garden and runs alongside the new deck. I hope that makes things a bit clearer! x

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Put in a few French drains where you dig a ditch and fill it with crushed rock to help the water drain. In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well.

Grass is easier to lay, gravel paths take planning but if done right look great. Use Nidagravel if you want a firm surface and minimum weeding.

I was left with this eyesore when the builders took away an old concrete shed. It is a west facing wall although not much sun in evening as there are lots of trees opposite and the grass you see is artificial. Capstones on the top, some kind of climber? But if there is a climber which kind cans be grown from pots? Thanks in advance for your creative brilliance.

Clay pavers look rather lovely as a path as does sandstone paving, or a mixture of both.

You seem to have the deck built on to of some of the pavers making their removal an issue. You could use recycle these and place them separated from each other by gravel within a gravel path. This will cope with the changing height and the curve.

Yes mii2, the deck is built onto the few pavers that form the ramp up from the lower patio to the lawn. Not ideal but they match the pavers of the lower patio (and are concreted in) so we just decided to leave those be and begin the new path from the top of that section.

I wanted gravel as I thought it would be easier to manage the upward slope of the lawn from there but Mr doesn't like the idea of it against the pavers of the ramp (potential for slippage and being transferred onto the lawn by little bare feet etc!) The only other solution I thought of was setts or something similar so they could rise with slope of the lawn? Not sure.
