Wood scraping problem... help

Hi all,

I had an issue with my bathroom sink since water was collecting in the small space between the sink and the vanity, so a darker water stain came up. I let it dry, and it seemed to be almost completely gone, but then i had the stupid idea of scraping it off a little bit to try and make it better... which backfired as the stain immediately turned darker.

I put some wax on it, but did not restore the wood, then i tried colourless wood varnish, still to no avail. What else can I do?

I’ve found that wood and water do not mix. I have oak worktops in my kitchen and a lot of black marks appeared near the sink. There is a product called Oxalic Acid that will lighten the wood. It is used a lot by woodworkers. I had to order online as I couldn’t find it in any hardware stores. Now it is a dangerous product and you must wear a proper filtered mask and gloves to apply. The crystals can float in the air and be breathed in causing damage to lungs. Now I know why it’s hard to find. I used it once, it worked but never again. It was terrified I would breath it in. I’m going to change my worktop instead!

Of course there may be other products available.

Once the water is in the timber, that’s it, it’s in and there’s nothing you can do about it. As Sonia says Oxalic Acid can be used but it will only take the surface off and trying to use it more than once doesn’t necessarily work.

From the looks of things, that really is the only place for the sectional. So...can you pull it out just a foot maybe away from the window? Move your tv over the stove if safe to do and try a big plant in that corner where the tv is now. Your painting behind some is way too big for that wall. Move to opposite wall. I would remove the black loves eat and replace with two reading chairs and maybe that end table you have by the sofa. For window treatments I just do not see drapes/curtains working in this room with that sectional.

Hi Zoe , I had to take a second look to make sure this wasn't my photo! I have the same fireplace frame and our mirrors are similar! You have great taste ;) I can't offer any advise I'm afraid, but I'll be watching closely to see if something can be done. I wondered if it was possible to sand it down and paint it white or cream maybe, but the silver pieces may pose a problem. I'm tired of mine too. Here's hoping for some inspiration....

You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Maybe it's the black that's the problem not the wood at all
