Kitchen update - advice needed
all, i am in need of your precious advice and ideas to brighten up and make my kitchen more cool, more vibrant and up to date. We moved in this house a few years ago and slowly doing a refurbishment and do not seem to come to the kitchen part as either i lack ideas or moneywise i do not want to spend much given i am on mat leave with my 3rd baby 💃
what i aim to do is to- 1) replace extractor, 2) replace worktop 3) paint cabinets 4) change knobs on cabinets. really just to scratch the surface, but hope to achieve a better look & feel when being and cooking in the kitchen:) we also recently opened up the space by removing a wall between the kicthen and living room so that the flow is much more natural and now i can see my kitchen and all the old cabinets etc from the living room, hence the need to update is much more apparent.. i need advice in color scheme for the cabinet paint - all white or maybe a duo (one color top and another color bottom line of cabinets) and how about the worktop? wood? anyone has before and after kitchen refurb with similar color of tiles?? i will do refurb myself and i really appreciate everyones advice !! many many thanks!! p.s. the first photos without number are from my current kitchen and the ones with numbers - these are from my ideabook 🙂

Need more colour advice to tie living room and kitchen.
Comments (2)The protruding wall around the fireplace needs to be wallpapered or painted with dense motifs or tiled with stone/brick textured tiles or ply. Re-doing your fireplace will drastically change the look of your living room. See photos below. Consider painting the frames of your doors and sliding doors in the living room and kitchen a dark brown to match the floating shelf over the fireplace. Do not decide what you want to do in poor lighting as you have provided in the photos. Wine is a good color to consider. Also think of darker colors like plum and have different shades on each wall (from the same color family). Comments (4)Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. 3 years agoMixed unit colours can look good with a modern kitchen, but I would leave yours one colour. Something simple and neutral like white, pale grey or taupe is easy to live with. I have a wooden worktop and I will be changing it. It needs oiling every few months, and even with that it is not hardwearing. Mine is covered in dents, has faded in places and gone black in places near the sink. Water and wood just don't mix. Your worktop looks pretty good, so fix the end piece on the left where the chipboard is showing. You can get iron on end pieces.
So I would paint the units. Lots of people have done this so search “Repainted kitchens” on Advice. Change the knobs, loads for sale online, and change the tap for something more classic like a swan neck one. There are companies who sell replacements doors and drawers, as E D suggests, so that may be an option too.
Below are a couple of pics of my deteriorating wooden worktop. it is 10 years old and not fared well. Second pic is a tap that may suit your sink. Is the sink ceramic?

3 years agoWe have done similar to you in a very small kitchen (twice) - before and after (and after) photos attached! Make sure you do your prep of the doors properly and choose the right paints :) I am sure if you do a pro job the paint can be very hard wearing. We found we have got a few dings here and there when being clumsy with cutlery or pots and pans, so a spare pot of paint to touch up occasionally has been required.
