Anthracite grey upvc french doors or white?

I am having some french doors and glass roof light put into extension in the side return of my victorian terrace. Its part of the kitchen.

Im leaning towards getting grey french doors as I like the look of them on the inside but the other windows at the back of the house are white.

Eventually I will be replacing these (in the next couple of years) as the current upvc windows are quite old so will have the option of putting in grey throughout at this point.

However Im not sure about grey at the front...

So i guess my questions are

1. will it look weird to have grey doors but white windows at the back in the interim?

2. is it strange to have white at the front and grey at the back?

3. is grey a passing trend anyway and should i just stick to white and make everything much easier?

Grey is definitely a trend which will date.

My advice is to get timber windows, PVC will be outdated too eventually.

Timber windows can be painted any colour you like and come in double glazing too - something that picks out a tone in the roof and/or walls is beautiful - and you can change the colour regularly and easily. Timber windows last hundreds of years as apposed to PVC which last around 25 years. Timber looks more authentic, real and in keeping with your home. Your windows are the eyes to the face of your property. Also PVC has been said to give off chemicals under UV rays from the sun, which can cause asthma, unlike timber.

For me the main issue would be I think grey is a passing trend, like when people had mahogany pvc. I think black is a bit more timeless but you can never go wrong with white

I found your house in your ideabook area. Usually I do not like to cut a house in half with painted trim, but I love this house I found. The inner windows R painted white but I'd paint all windows, sills, trim & band across house, that enchanting French-gray-green. The house in photo seems more buff than cream. Thanks everyone. The company I am using does have a lighter grey option but I didnt much fancy it, looked like it was trying to look metal or something. I'm not a huge fan of white upvc, that's what we have at the moment. I'm sure the grey will be fine and chances are after some time of living with them I might not even notice what color they are - hopefully too busy looking at our views .... or the rain! I'm off now to our local golf club which I'm told has the exact grey I'm talking about in their new lounge area. Might give me an idea. Fingers x'd I'll get it right.

Hi! What was your final decision? I am also working on my tiny WC and came to the following conclusions (after 2 months spent in tile shops, looking through houzz and pinterest photos). The tiles in small spaces: 1. Should reflect. The space should not be matt and absorb the light. The glazed tile reflects the objects like a mirror and creates depth. 2. Should not be oversized. When you like the big tiles on the photo you posted - just adore them at the picture. they will not go to a tine space. Compare the size of the bathroom and the size of the tile. Try to imagine the pattern. 3. Don't be mislead by professional designs and photos (like the ones you posted and you like). Most of them are the bathrooms which are really huge in size. So the tiles that are on the picture will not go for your project. You want a small SPA oasis? Forget about concrete and metal look and all the things like that. I took a sample of concrete tile in my bath... really you feel uncomfortable, when you step on the concrete barefoot, Though I have floor heating , I wouldn't go barefoot. Its concrete!:))) Concrete is good for a big loft or industrial design, I think. 5. For a SPA - look I would opt either for the mosaic (which is classical for SPA, but be careful with that. May be monochromatic or achromatic) or wood optic tiles combined with warm white tones. 6. Much color in small bathrooms is not a good option. It is better to add it with accessories. Moreover you can change the look just by replacing your turqoise towels by grey ones. You can add dynamics only by choosing not a typical size of the white tile and making an interesting pattern. For example, for my tiny WC i have 25x75 cm tiles and will put them in a brick wall style. What I have chosen for my tiny WC is a wood optic (very light) tile for the floor and white tiles for the walls. They will cover the wall by 120 cm. The rest of the wall will be covered with wallpaper (navy blue or dark gray). Or may be just painted. Wish you good luck!

PVC can also be painted if you want to change colour, but having lived in a house with wood double glazing, I cant recommend it. The wood warps over time and windows develop draughts, also the cost of repainting every few years was hugely expensive, if you could find a painter who didnt mind doing windows. The old houses with wood windows and single glazing were extremely cold and draughty in winter - I remember it well ! So we now have PVC double glazed windows and have never regretted it, they are very dark grey outside and white inside.

Yes, if you just wish to freshen up your windows and they are in good order, painting them makes good use of what you have. If the supplier is reputable with a good guarantee on the product you will be covered against warping and big draughts. I believe that slight ventilation is usually required to avoid condensation.

Our timber windows are around 140 years old and still going strong with no warping. I do urge people to consider the health benefits for the family - clean air in your home.

In the long run, with timber windows last at least 6 times the age the value for money of timber which outweighs the cost of painting within one lifetime alone. Also timber will not be adding to landfill or use as much energy to create.

Finally the character and quality of finish is much different.

It depends on the colour of your brick perhaps and also what will you replace them with, timber or upvc? If the bricks are yellow then warm pale greys with a tinge of green yellow can look amazing, black can also look really good with brick. Can you post some photos?
