Slide and Turn Doors or Sliding Unit

I am undertaking a complete renovation and extension of an old house in Guernsey. It is a reverse plan house with a 50 sqm 1st floor open plan kitchen/living dining room leading out on to a circa 18 sqm sun terrace on top of the flat roof extension. The opening between the two is 3280 mm x 2200mm and will be a major feature. I have vastly differing quotes for sliding doors vs slide and turn. Quotes for triple glazed sliding doors from circa £2,800 vs slide and turn @ circa £14,500. I love the slide and turn doors but really cannot understand the huge difference in price. Does anyone have any brilliant ideas or a similar experience? I have considered bifold but they would encroach onto the terrace considerably.

Hi Adam, we also looked at both sliding doors and slide and turn for our opening and were shocked at the price of the slide and turns. One thing that a few designers and window providers said to us was that essentially slide and turn doors (or bifold doors) look better when they are open, and sliding doors look better when they are closed (as they tend to have fewer panels and so less view is blocked by pane). As we are based in London, where for most of the year the doors will be closed, we were advised by everyone to go with sliding doors. (NB our opening is wider, so it was a difference between 3 sliding door panels or 6/7 slide and turn panels).

My sister had recently added sliders (3) to her kitchen and they are fantastic. They are huge yet really easy to slide open and shut.

Hello Jen, I am so surprised that no one has mentioned vertical blinds to you? They are very much back in fashion and work beautifully in a room such as yours. They come in 3.5" veins, which mean they will fold back and tuck into each recess when fully open. They turn to let as much light in as you need and then close when you want full privacy. They will be fitted in the recess above the windows. You can either have one complete rail length or two so you have a separate section over the door. You can have what's know as a middle split, i.e: half goes left and right. Personally I would suggest one length that opens to the left, therefore leaving your door completely uncovered when open. The pulley system is very much like a roller blind and are safety fixed to the wall so children can not get caught in them. They come in a huge rang of colours and materials and better still they are very affordable. I am working with a number of new developments in Hertfordshire at the moment and these are what the clients are all asking for. I love the tall units but you need to go straight to the ceiling to prevent dust and dirt settling on the top. I would put a row of small up and over cupboards along the very top as an option. Very handy for unsightly bulky items. I don't like the end open shelves by sink very dated but what you could do is a long double shelf all the way along the island with a wine racking either side for balance vertically. I think shelving each side of the sink would be better. You have a lot of cupboards but no deep drawers which are highly valued these days. Good selling point. I Like your colour suggestions... The little Greene paint company have a lovely grey so does farrow and ball. Where are you sourcing your Quartz and what flooring? Do your ovens have easy open shelf doors ..handy as they retract so don't get in the way as you take food out..Neff offer best ones. If you want a better balance of tall you could always do fridge freezer one side and pull out pantry on the other with racking. Then on sink side don't go all the way along the wall just have it as centred space so you can pull out larder doors. On your island you will need your bin as this'll be prep area? What is the room opposite tall cupboards? Need the island to look good from that side as that is what you will see. Hope of help. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

We've got 3400 2 pane slider. Your lowest quote of £2800 is way cheaper than what we paid!

I love the slide and turn doors - however do you think you will really use them?
I’ve read lots of articles about how people have these types of doors but don’t actually use them. I’m guilty myself; we had bifolds fitted into an extension about 10 year ago when they were the in thing. The reality is that we have only ever fully opened them once or twice! (They’re still nice doors and I still like the look of them - however if I was to do it again, I’d probably fit something different because we only ever open the first section like we would a normal door!).

Sarah, I think that's a very valid question, we have 8m wide sliding doors (the middle 2 panels of 4m open) in our current house and they pretty much stay open or ajar for about 6 months of the year so I do think we will use them. The sun terrace they open onto is South facing so I can see them being open a lot of the time.
