If it were mine I would remove all of the paper then get a plasterer to skim the wall. If it was just a few dents and holes you could use filler, then sand it down when it’s dry, but looks like you need professional help. Plasterers tend to charge £150 - £250 a day, depending on your location. Would probably be done in a day?

Looks like plasterboard was wallpapered without being skimmed first. Nighmare to repair (I tried), so like Sonia says, best to get a plasterer in to skim the walls for a perfect finish.

I painted my kitchen three years ago, and I love it. It's hard work and can take some weeks to do. You need to take doors off, remove the hinges and handles. Remember you need to prime and paint two coats on each side, so for a door that equates to six coats of paint and letting each coat dry. I used Mylands of London paint, I'm just hooked on this paint as the eggshell is dead flat with only 8 percent sheen, you wont get another paint any flatter. And if the paints good enough for Downtown Abbey, then it's good enough for us. I would hold back on painting wall tiles, as they are white and look fine , paint the cupboards first and see what it looks like. I choose Myalnds paint and had the colour mixed in a farrow and ball blue green. See photos. Good luck Yvonne

Hi, it's a lovely room and you only need to make a few minor tweaks. The two accent pillows in brown in front of the bed pillows need to be removed. They are too large and shapeless. Remove the brown throw. Your bed linen is lovely next to the grey wallpaper. If you'd like accent cushions, I would go smaller, tailored and something with an a print in grey and white or a colour that pops. The grey objects on the side tables are lights? I would replace these with a silver base and white shade. Remove the objects from the window. You could add a mirror either over each side light or a rectangular version over the bed. Here's my room with a similar colour scheme. Have fun with your decorating!

Thanks both, that's super helpful. I've just booked a plasterer to have a look at it tomorrow. Any tips on the easiest way to get wallpaper off the plasterboard?? It has been a real struggle!

In our last house we stripped back to brick and then dot and dabbed new plasterboard which is what I would do however if it’s a solid wall and the plaster hasn’t blown then carefully removing all the existing covering, filling and sanding is a cost effective DIY way of tackling the issue then I think it could be skimmed, in fact I don’t even think you’d bother filing the holes as a plasterer would just skim the wall once it’s clear of all the existing covering, that’s the most important part that and checking that the existing plaster hasn’t come away from the brick behind.

If it is plasterboard that has been papered onto then I’d definitely rip it all out and start again. Easy to rip it all out as the hassle to make it good would outweigh the the benefit plus you’ll have lovely clean as smooth walls that look very pleasing.

Yes one wall is definitely plasterboard that has been papered onto. What are the costs like to replace all the plasterboard, we weren't expecting this and worried about expenses.

Also what colour is the plasterboard underneath?? It's getting confusing with the wallpaper?! How far do I take it off??

Some parts the wallpaper comes off right down to the brown, I can't really stop that from happening. Is this going to be a problem. It's that 3D type wallpaper which has also been painted over.

Don’t worry too much about the cost of plasterboard it’s about £7 a sheet and standard size is 2.4m tall and 1.2m wide so you can work out the cost to renew the whole room or just the bad bits (I bet you don’t need to do it all) plus they’d either use battens to fix to the wall, again cheap just lengths of timber screwed into your existing brick walls or dot and dab where they use big blobs of adhesive to stick the plasterboard to the wall. Get a few local well rated plasterers in to give you a price and you will know exactly where you are with it. Better still get a recommendation from a friend. Also the tearing out of the room may save you a bit of cost so ask for a price to do it with them doing the demolition or you doing it yourself it’s really easy to do and might save a few pounds. I’ve popped a pic on of some of my old house I stripped completely, it’s easy if a bit messy!

Sorry just to add that sort of grey covering that is coming off the plasterboard is the paper finish that covers the inside of the board that piece of plasterboard is truly gone, don’t worry it would have always need to be replaced and it’s not an expensive material 👍 you can buy it online yourself or buy from a merchant but the plasterer will just supply it for you as it’s just a raw material.

What would happen if we plastered over that plasterboard without the outer layer?

I’m not sure but that paper covering is there for a reason. Any decent plasterer will offer you advice against it. As I say plasterboard is a fairly cheap raw material so easy enough to replace and that way you know the job has been done well.
