To Cove or not to cove?!

We are coming to the end of a one storey extension at the back of a victoria detached. We were able to restore the extremely high ceilings & would love to restore the coving! However, we also have a new picked roof in the same open plan room and beams crossing the room, would this look strange in half of the roof (not the pitched roof) the kitchen will cross both areas?

Yes, I think it would look strange. We have same in our kitchen and decided no coving at all in that room.

You can paint the inside of FP opening charcoal and then I would go for a blue/grey and not greige. Those colors tend to be very dark. You have black furnishings and a blue/grey would look very fresh. Your art above FP has blue in it, so replace rug and get some pillows for sofa that will bring in the colors of the painting. Why not just put in some shelves, one big enough to hold tv. That would give a more open concept to room. If you need one enclosed to store components, that would fit also. I would not build up too high on the wall.

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

Hi I am painting my house at the moment and time is precious on it as the painter is on site. I would appreciate any recommendations from the Dulux range - House is c. 700 sq foot, rooms small and south facing. I have coving, so I was thinking of a pure white on coving and then an off-white on the ceilings and neutral colours on the wall that create space and are warm at the same time. Doors and skirting need to be painted as well so should I keep these a pure white as well? Living area has smoked oak wood on floor. Carpet will be light cream / beige in the bedrooms and hall. Would appreciate any help as I am against time on this as the painter is on site and has all the prep work done. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

Need help picking paint color for new wall unit

I’ve been struggling to pick a color for weeks and I need to make a decision soon so hoping you can advise! I’m getting a new full wall tv unit built into my sitting room to replace an old ikea tv unit there presently, it will have presses at the bottom, space in the middle for wall mounting a tv, and shelves all around. It will come up to the ceiling and will have spotlights at the top. (sketch attached) I need to pick a color from the Farrow and Ball catalog. I’m trying to find a color that works well with what I have already. There is no other furniture in the room yet other than a couch as this is a new house and we only just moved in a couple of months ago, so I’m trying to match it to the walls, floors and the couch! I’ve attached some pictures. Our walls are supposedly Elephant Breath (but the builders used a cheaper alternative I believe). I have some purple in the room (sofa cushions and a rug). There is a large bay window on one side of the room and opposite to it a glass double door into the kitchen area. All doors, skirting boards, and coving are white. I really don’t want to pick white and would like a bit of contrast, but not sure if I should go lighter or darker than the wall. Any help really appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Thank you, I'm swaying towards none too it's just the ceilings are so high! My husband really wants to put coving back but I think there would be too much going on!

No to coving your new space. It would look to busy to the eye. I love coving, and have it in our home, but not in our extension as it would not have looked right

Thanks, that's what I'm finding hard, we have everyone in the house and the area we coved would be the existing part of the house, but I guess we've made in modern by knocking through and extending! So I think you are right :-)

Don't think coving would look right with the cross beams, two distinctly different styles.
What sort of light fittings are you having? They could help with the perceived height of the ceiling.

I’m going to be a lone voice and say it could work. You could aim for the effect of a coffered ceiling. What does the existing coving look like?

I have the same dilema and my extension looks more or less the same as yours. I really want coving as it doesnt feel fnished without it. Im not sure whether to cove up to the apex and stop?… can I ask what you ended up doing please?

@Gemma Wilson, best to start a new thread. For what it is worth, I have removed all coving in our house and it’s the better for it. Rooms look roomier and ceilings higher. You do need to replaster which is a pain.
