Hi Maria,

You do have a challenge if you don't want Ikea. Granted, even an 8 ft Pax Ikea wardrobe system won't be cheap.

As you said you've always had period peices, you may look at Next Door website & Freecycle. There may be options on there that are good quality that you can upcycle or that will fit what you are looking for. This may be a good resource for quality as many of the newer made furniture that aren't very expensive have declined in quality over the last several years - same goes for Ikea as I used to source these for my clients' fitted walk-in wardrobes and the quality has definitely deteriorated on most of their products. Otherwise, maybe look at antique shops or auctions. This may require more of a hunt on your part, but quality and cheap are not usually bedfellows without some extra elbow grease.

Hi Maria. I have been going through the same search. We have an antique wardrobe that is not quite the right scale and storage efficiency and are looking for a replacement. So far, here is what I have found, hope it helps:
1. Ikea wardrobes with Pax system for modern wardrobes are so good for storage efficiency. I agree with you completely on how they look the same. They are also not the cheapest when you customise with all the internal options.
  
  Ikea hacks are everywhere for ideas around kitchens and wardrobes. One is to spray the wardrobe (it will be a better finish but needs a professional or some equipment) to the colour you prefer, also choose different handles.   my sister has recently bought the inner Ikea wardrobe drawers and had a carpenter build an MDF carcass with shaker style doors and brushed brass handles. Farrow and ball paint and it looks amazing! Bespoke and stylish and best of both worlds.
2. eBay can be a good source of wardrobes that are not everyday high street bland but have a nod to design or traditional furniture. Here are some I have found on recent searches that might help in finding that middle ground:

This seller can paint F&B colours, provides options for different handles. Would recommend metal clothes rail over wooden as no bowing. They have a decent range.

My first instinct was to move it to a garage/basement for good storage but the more I think about it the more I think I'd prime inside and out with Kilz then apply a couple of coats of white semi-gloss (use good quality paint.. Benjamin Moore) in the same white that you'd use for all the trim in your room. Be sure to lightly sand and 'tack rag' between coats. If the handles are removable by all means remove them prior to painting...fill in holes, sand smooth and paint as previous sentence. Set up inside the way you find most functional. Buy nice new knobs ( maybe crystal?) and, if it is as tall as it appears, have crown molding installed to create a custom look. It is probably far better built than anything else you could find.

Hi, I have a full wall of excellent quality fitted wardrobes in my master bedroom. The only problem is they are orange. I would like to update them but not change the doors. Should I chalk paint them and add new hardware? Maybe stain them a darker shade? Any suggestions welcome
