What size Velux in a south facing garden?

Hi,

I am currently doing a 4m rear extension to my house. The width is 7m.

We have a south facing garden and I understand I will have to install blinds to the windows to stop too much heat coming in. We also have a 3.8m bifold door and a 1.8m window above the sink.

I can't decide what size velux to put in? We just want maximum light but don't want to bake either!

Any advice would be so valuable...I have attached a plan but we've changed the back wall to a 3.8m bifold door rather than a sliding door and a 900mm window.

My old house had a 2m deep, South facing extension. I think it was probably about 6m wide. It had 3 velux windows and we never had a blind on them. The other windows were 2.5m wide by 1.5 high and a single fully glazed door with tall slim windows either side. I rarely complained about being too hot and the light was amazing.

I'm sure I replied to this yesterday, but can't see it!

You need to sketch out your options to see what looks best for you, that's what we done.

I'd have velux in proportion to doors
How wide are the doors? I wouldn't want velux off centre, which is why you really need to draw it all out.

I'd want my velux equal spaced.

Do you have any tall furniture down any walls under sloped roof? If so, I wouldn't have velux above tall furniture.

You need to make accurate sketches to see what you like.

If there's an island or dining table, is there a velux above? If so, you need to think about hoe your lights will work. If hob on island, extractor?

Id have 2 long horizontal velux. We have 114 X 70, you could probably do bigger in a bigger space.

HI -- gross635 -- Your right to some degree but you can't move the main floor bath to the other side because then that interfers with the floor plan on the second floor. Would not work . I would have loved to turn the whole plan around but it won't work in this case. Added note to what I posted before is to get rid of anywalls you don't need and also not every room has to have a door. Like the one on the lounge and the one at the end of the hall. I would open the lounge up by not having the walls on the entrance hall . As for a closet , there is space in front of the set back powder room for some coat hooks etc. I also question the fact of , if the lounge is really needed. Everything could have been shifted to the front and the kitchen set back , then that would have made a larger dining/familyroom area . But that would have ruined the resale value . So I think moving the bathrooms was the lest and best for this plan. One question I have , is this an English plan ?, because the English love putting doors on every room ?And usually the doors swing the wrong way.

May I suggest since you are going to be weed fighting for a time, that you cut a curving path or track to place dg over gravel on with a border, and rake in native wildflower seed after the next rain - see if you have a native plant society and phone to ask who is the commercial restoration seed supplier in your region ( it will be lovely things like lupine, lacy whites, ) They will have a stock mix for your area and that will bring you some simple loveliness whilst you determine more long term goals . .. the larger elements provide some nice shelter and enclosure here . . . possible you would want to go up the slope to where you've a nice view and make a larger area (again, using edge or pavers for edge, put down gravel then decomposed granite or chip seal (local term here, sorry) - something that will drain and provide a destination for a short ramble eventually, you might plant a garden along the way from here to there .. . don't tear anything out that is established . . as with trimming it will give you a mix of sizes so you can layer in the garden

Hi, you have a lovely home! I read through your thread, and I like Dar Eckarts suggestion above the best. I think because of the symmetry of it as an H shaped house is symmetrical, and it would also keep the space looking decorated but still open and uncluttered which is what an entrance should be. Sorry, but I don't care for the bookcase idea in an entrance. I also noticed the masks you have, and think it would be great to decorate the space using them as inspiration. Here is a photo to show you the kind of rug I think would work here.

I feel in a situation like this, I would not add windows with no view that would probably end up with some type of coverings a great deal of the time. My situation would be use of mirrors to reflect available light back into room. Mirror could be styled to look like Windows etc. we have a similar situation in our kitchen, and we mirrored over the sink, and created two faux windows using mirror and drapery side pannels. The effect works great, and when you add the right lighting the effect is wonderful, day and night. Take a good look and visualize day and night views creating with mirrors designed into a "today" style and look.

Oh and we don't have blinds either, but I'm in Scotland and have no need for them.
