splashback advice

Hello, we are designing new kitchen, hob and tall unit will be in the same place and we plan to have quartz surfaces with 100mm upstand and painted walls. What we don’t know however is what size quartz splashback to get. As the hob is 600mm would we get 600mm wide splashback?

Also how high should splashback go, all the way up to the extractor? Does it need to go partially behind the extractor to keep it in place or is adhesive against plaster sufficient for the quartz.

Considering new extractor too as I think this one is too big for the hob.

Why don't you post your kitchen floorplan and your new design and we can help you. There are lots really good folk on here who can advise how it could improve etc.

Hi Ellie, here is my design attached. I think the design is pretty much nailed, it's just the decision as to the splash back on the hob I think that is remaining.

We just painted a color called "Latte" over the dark red walls in our place and we keep thinking that someone left the light on! It adds that much light to the place as the red was just sucking out any light in the place. Find a color you like more for that wall and repaint...and/or maybe add a ceramic tile backsplash? It will make it feel brighter in there immediately as you will get a lot of light reflection. I love the idea of sage green with your cabinets.

Glass subway tile, soft creams, pale blues, or yellows. I would stick with muted colors. But definitely color not one dimensional solid color. The glass tile will have a nice sparkle to it, makes it bright.

Either could be laid- you would need to use different adhesives on the wood or concrete though. There isn't much difference between- I would look for a reputable supplier and not online though as the decent quality may not be there. Any tiles can be laid on a diagonal if your tiler is good enough! Jade

Hi there, personally I think a turquoise glass splash aback will be the best option. We have one ourselves in orange and we find it the best when it comes to cleaning. We have complimented ours with matching chairs and objects and I think it is really effective. I also think that the grey tiles would work but I would definitely recommend the splash back. Is there a wall or something along by the utility end?

What is happening in the other bigger space? Dining table?

Hi Ellie, The utility end has a stud wall that is perpendicular to the washing machine/tumble dryer. I have attached a slightly older design that I used a different tool for, It shows the bifold doors and purpose for the rest of the space. Does it look ok? I designed it all myself. It is south facing so lots of light comes through the bifolds making a nice area to sit and read with a coffee. We do have a separate living area that has the TV and main sofa. Hope it helps

Hi Jamie

If you choose to keep your curved glass extractor, there don't really a "rule" when it comes to their splashbacks and it's up to you and your budget.

For that location, I think you'd go the full width of the glass and as there is such a small space between that and the oven, I'd fill that and make it equal on the other side, maybe even to the window if that will be a silly sliver.

For height, you have a few options:
1. Ask if the granite can be curved to match the extractor shape
2. go straight up behind the glass to the highest point of the intake section
3. Make a bold design choice and go to the ceiling
If you choose a smaller extractor, you would match the width 600mm and run to the underside or again, behind the extractor and to the ceiling.

Hi Emily, thanks for the advice. We are considering now potentially replacing extractor with one the same width 60cm as hob, I think the current one is too big. In this case what would the best advice be for splashback? Thank you

Hi Jamie,

I think that's the right decision. I think this style extractor is very smart and would look lovely with the splashback going the full 60cm width and up to the vent.

I don't know if you've decided on colour but I love glass, either coloured or clear to see the wall colour or I've got a clear glass with beautiful window film on the back which is really cost effective.

Good solution changing the hood to a more square one to better suit the full width stove splashback. I would also suggest raising the upstand behind the sink, I don’t think 100mm is enough of a splash-back to prevent your walls getting a soaking.

Thanks Emily and hi Wumi, we did consider that but because kitchen is quite small thought it would look a bit strange with up down up down with regard to upstand / splashback. Thought high quality kitchen paint should suffice or not?

Yes, I thought that might be the case of it looking a bit weird, but you don’ t want to rely on kitchen paint to keep your walls protected from water. Same concept as having a bathroom sink really.

Why not keep the same upstand around the whole perimeter and have the sink and stove splash-backs in a different material above the up stand? Could even match the colour of the splash-backs to your wall paint to make it blend in or have it contrasting.

Personally I would leave out the upstand altogether and install tall splashbank panels instead. There are some really nice panels available in a variety of materials and finishes that would compliment your quartz countertop.

I think 100mm behind a sink is fine in the kitchen and looks right.
