floorboards in bedrooms/landing?

Hi,

Renovating a Victorian terrace at the moment and love the look of original floorboards teamed with rugs for upstairs (landing and bedrooms). We would need to get the current floorboards restored and sanded, etc.

We have children and my worry is about soundproofing and insulation - having previously lived in a first floor flat with floorboards in the flat above, I distinctly remember how loud the acoustic and impact noise was. I don’t want to be listening to kids thundering around their bedroom or equally having to worry about waking them up from downstairs. If we put in decent sized, good quality rugs (perhaps with an extra underlay mat beneath), do you think this would mitigate that? Would love to hear from anyone who has this set up in a similar age house.

Personally I think carpet is preferable for bedrooms and landing both in terms of noise insulation and creating a cosy feeling. That's just my preference though - to have something warm and soft underfoot when I get up in night etc. I think wall to wall carpet will offer the most sound insulation.

I agree with you though that floorboards and rugs is an appealing look. We've got this downstairs in our house. We invested in using Celotex (like Kingspan, solid insulation boards) under the floorboards throughout the whole ground floor which has made a huge difference in terms of warmth and drafts. It's also worth spending time and effort using foam tape under beading or in big gaps between boards. Luckily our actual floorboards were in really good condition so we didn't have any cost associated with restoring them. I'm not sure to what degree cost is a factor for you, but you might find that once you add up sanding, restoring and really good insulation measures that it actually works out to be more than putting down a nice carpet and good underlay.

We sanded our floorboards in the bedroom but we later went back to fitted carpets. I really missed the cosiness of a carpet and I found the floorboards so cold! I have a rug over wood in the living room and that’s great but I do love a cosy bedroom!

When I was young we got new carpet throughout the house. The salesman suggested a different color for each room. My mother went with his choices. From the end of the hall it looked like a kaleidoscope. It was ghastly. I vote for one color throughout-a neutral color!

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

What to put on hall landing? Carpet or laminate?

Sorry, I'm confused. You have a landing that is attached, some how, to laminate flooring somewhere. Stairs will be carpeted...but not sure how stairs tie in to the laminate. Totally lost. You have stairs that will have carpet. They are attached to the landing...that is some how attached to flooring with laminate. There might be stairs involved, there might not be. At this point, without photos or blue prints or a full, clear statement describing the whole thing, we won't be able to help. What is the flooring 'upstairs'? Putting carpet on stairs, willy-nilly, with NO connection to "other areas of carpet" is quite odd. Many people who use carpet will often "carpet the stairs" and then carpet all of the area "upstairs" to match the stairs. This is why they put carpet on the stairs in the first place...it matches the "upstairs". Using carpets on stairs, then on a landing use laminate, and then continue carpet on stairs once again is very, very odd. Ending the carpet without continuing with it (ie. upstairs is another flooring type entirely) is another "odd thing to do". In essence, we will need more precise description of what is going on here.

Hi, I have semi-solid wood flooring in the hallway of my house and I want to put laminate upstairs in the bedrooms and the landing but I'm confused about what to do with the stairs. Ideally I'd like a laminate stairs but am concerned about it not matching the wood in the hall and I've also been told by various suppliers that it's an awkward job that they don't usually do. I'd also be worried about children slipping on a laminate stairs. If I go with carpet I'd prefer not to have to carpet the landing as well but am worried that might look strange and how to finish the top step seems to be a difficulty as well both from an aesthetic and safety point of view. Any advice would be much appreciated!
