Should I hang a fake light purely for decoration?

I have spotlights in my hallway which give off plenty of light and are movement activated. Therefore I don't need another light source but would like to hang something as it looks a bit boring and sterile... Any ideas? Could I put up a ceiling light (shade/chandelier) that isn't actually connected to anything!

Love the bold blue!

I'd hang some prints on the stairs wall. Wouldn't hang anything from the ceiling. A mirror on the empty blue wall between the two doors. I'd personally paint the window frame white.

Or just one or two large prints

Perhaps it's a better idea to decorate the walls and/or the floor (rug for example). A ceiling light usually comes to life when you turn on the light. Could you share a photo of the hallway? That will help us giving you more to the point suggestions. You can attach a photo to a comment. Wait until it's clear before you hit the submit button

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

I would also definitely go white if the windows are on the green wall. Will be much more natural to tie the accent wall with the stark wht contrasting walls. Always a very chic contemporary look. Also very relaxing as opposed to the treatments standing out when you already have your standout feature- the green accent wall. Great white bed you ordered! Then I love all the blue/green/ silver accent advice. I did a similar room in purples/greys/ whites and we used great posted prints of florals with a little oriental flair in nice big mats w frames. You could do florals or nice big botanicals in greens would be very fresh and modern!! White or silver frames or maybe even the shock of black would be cool.

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! Thanks a lot for the tip re dimensions for a piece of art over the sofa and a coffee table, both of which are on my list to get, I would’ve had no clue re this and it’s fantastic to discover that there are certain rules which, if you apply them, can make your room work visually! Thanks again for the brilliant advice, I really appreciate it.

Good hallway.

Nice to have daylight coming from so many sides.

Having a pendant light may be tricky although sometimes a pendant can work in the space above the stairs’ newel. A simple globe, as in Carolina’s first photo could perhaps work.

I noticed your stairs’ spindles seem to be boarded up. Have you ever considered removing that, to (hopefully) reveal the spindles?

lovely bright hallway! I would also say go for some prints up the wall. If you want something from the ceiling a scandinavian / danish mobile may work Depending on the proportions. We have one and it’s great!

Hi Jasmin, You've got a window and a glass door bringing light into your hall which is lovely. Have you considered using a mirror? Perhaps on the wall opposite the window? I think that could add some interest and bounce some additional light in. I'm not sure about the ceiling light. From what I can see your celiling isn't exceptionally high and I think you'd lose the feeling of height which you've gained by using the spotlights. I love the ideas by other readers of opening up the spindles on your staircase and adding art to the stair wall. One other idea - maybe consider a contemporary coving to provide a finish between the walls and the ceiling? Hope that helps? Jo (Room4 Interiors)

Thanks so much everyone! Weirdly the staircase is brick we checked for spindles straight away! I agree with art and mirrors definitely. Because the house is 1960s I wasnt sure if coving was in keeping but what is a contemporary coving? Xx

Also the front door needs replacing but am worried about losing light (door broken) any suggestions for a nice door?

You can get some fabulous doors which have partial glazing which would limit the amount of light you'd lose. Something like this maybe? You could also consider windows either side of the door but maybe not to the floor as you have the radiator (but that may be a bigger job). Also this is the sort of contemporary coving I was thinking of...

I smiled wryly when you mentioned losing the light - I was planning on replacing a dated and damaged half-glazed door with one with a semi/arc light at the top.

Due to lockdown, I kept myself busy renovating the existing door instead, which meant I took it off for a few days and blocked the entrance with cardboard.
OMG, despite large south-facing windows, losing the dual aspect light really affected the feel of the room - it was awful. So much dingier. I couldn't wait to tear the cardboard down every morning.
