Tips to make the fence colour work against red brick

Hey guys! New to Houzz and looking for some advice please. I painted my fence dusky gem shade from Cuprinol and it’s a lot darker than expected and I think it’s clashing with the red brick. What do you guys think? Does it work? Should I change the colour - if so any suggestions? I was aiming to go for a light neutral look and add a few more plants. Below are the photos - with the paint and without

Muted clay over the top might lighten it enough to soften it slightly .

I agree deepen the color, don't change it and yes art art art! maybe lessen the presence of the brick with the earlier suggestion of the metal cogs its and use traditional artwork pics/nature/paintings on the painted wall. I also like the idea to paint the part of the wall that juts out in a darker shade of the same color. Now you have lots to consider and lots to dismiss as well. Good luck and have fun

With the wood trim, and a white crown . .. I think the duvet color scheme wants white painted skirting and window / window sill. Then, try a softer violet on the accent wall .. .since both the red or the blue could coordinate with that but otherwise we have opposites - As a backdrop, violet can be nice with gray and white. Look at bm faded violet http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/fadedviolet#ce_s=violet and bm picket fence for the other walls, ( a soft warm off white that echos the tone of the carpet) with crisp white trim. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/picketfence If you want a deep shade, look at wood violet .. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/woodviolet#ce_s=violet the thing with a small room is that a shot of intense color can do a lot if paired mostly with neutrals and white. Great if you have a white wood headboard or padded slipcover above the bed, white matted art. . .. you do have good natural light, but with a dark wall you will want bedside lighting to be light and bright for nighttime. Here, the wood provided a gold element that was sort of helpful with the blue but will clash with where you are going.. Paint it out, and voila, you are on your way. . . there is a thread where a woman focused on white with coral - I'll find it and bring you the link so you can follow her decision making - she chose a strong accent wall in a small room and then concentrated on white and it is lovely.

It makes me cross that people think they have a right to make some quite negative comments on this post. Masmccar76 put these photos on because she thought people would like to see a genuinely lovely transformation of her garden. Instead there have been some downright nasty comments. By all means make comments but keep them constructive. Houzz is all about is sharing ideas, not about being nasty

Hello Duncan, They are good and I am biased as I don't use companies that don't provide trade discount... as I usually like to help my clients out... Here's a few images and an edging on a runner can be lovely too... I have also included one of a painted stair... Thank you so much for your suggestion and muted clay is a lovely colour. I may have to let this paint weather out, then try again. I really should get samples before doing a whole project! Do you think if I sand the paint - any other colour would work?

Are you planning on any planting/shrubs/hanging baskets or anything? If so, I'd do that first then see how it looks. I think it's just all a bit bare really.

The lack of planting is the problem. The fence colour is fine. Add some shrubs or climbers and it will soften the look.

Hi Sonia & Ellie. Thank you so much for responding. Yes you are both 100% right, it is bare right now and needs plants/climbers. I love the photo inspiration Sonia and that fence colour (maybe change it to that colour next year if this doesn't grow on me hehe).

Gardening is not my strongest skill so will do some research to see which plants/shrubs will work. I want to hang two baskets on the 2nd and 3rd brick walls which should help too. The higher the plants grow, the nicer it should look. Thank you guys so much for taking the time to respond and great suggestions.

Yes I agree it was really nice without paint and I should have just stained it. The colour was supposed to be a light grey but it didn’t come out like it should have. I can’t undo that now unfortunately so trying to make it work. Hopefully plants will help and repaint next year if still not working :)

I would recommend a nice soft green. No expert, but I think the good news is you can just paint over the current grey. If you’re up for it I think you should do it before you start planting so you still have all the space to do it.

@Sonia has used a lovely green on some of her garden furniture which I think would bring the natural and ‘warm’ character back to your fence.

And yes... loads of substantial planting needed.

As said, you’re at the right address (this forum, not me...😊) for the best planting advice. 👍

there is too much contrast now and the fence is too 'clean' a colour compared to the brick. Will definitely look better with planting done, but all I can see is the colour clash and I suggest you sort that out first. I was going to suggest you paint the wall to get rid of the contrast, but actually, the fence doesn't go with the paving tiles either - sorry, you need to paint the fence again! a warmer darker colour, something more similar to the colour of weathered wood or a dark grey like in Sonia's photo.

Sim K. I don't know where you live, but flowering climbing vines will cover the fence.
Honeysuckle. (yellow and/or pink)
Pink Sweet Peas
Trumpet vine (yellow and/or orange)
Silver Lace vine
Potted Morning Glory (so it doesn't take over)

Also consider evergreen vines.

We all paint things a colour that turns out to be a bit off, so don't worry about it. I don't think plants will fix it, the peachy slabs are the issue, the blue clashes with them. Don't know if it's possible to get a soft grey/brown but that might work.

Ah, the joys of colour - I agree that this has not turned out the way you were probably hoping! As others have indicated, I think there is too much blue in this grey to tone easily with the brick and paviers. While covering with plants will help, I think you may be advised to overpaint - actually a darker grey, with plenty of more "brown" tones would probably give a better finished result. F&B Moles Breath or London Clay would be the sort of tones worth considering.

Everyone of course has their own taste, here is what I would do: paint the brick part white (a bit drastic in your case as the bricks look nice as they are, but I have seen exactly that done and it looks stunning!) and yes, definitely go for plants, I would go for evergreens in large pots e.g. magnolias, palm trees etc. As it is I think once the plants are there it will look lovely.
