Need help with awkward living room layout
Comments (3)I disagree with the above comments. If you're open to big changes, especially if you plan on replacing the fireplace, you could install a lower mantle, and install the TV above it on a swing arm. This way, the TV and fireplace will remain the focus in the centre of the room, while still being able to view the TV wherever you deem most comfortable on any given day. I think the oblong shape of the room would allow for a couple different seating arrangements. Looking at the second image (fireplace on the right), imagine a compact love seat with it's back facing the double doors. Across from the love seat, 2 accent chairs, backs facing the photographer. Add a coffee table of your choice, and you now have a conversation space in front of the fireplace that is also ideal for watching TV. Thinking about the space behind the love seat, closest to the double doors; a half-height, full-width bookshelf would be lovely along the right wall (left of the fireplace), or even a cushioned bench seat with storage underneath, or both! One orientation to the right of the fireplace, and one to the left. Behind the love seat you could place a console table with lamps and accent decor that would create a visual division, making each seating area seem more intimate and purposeful. Add a full-width, floor length set of drapes on either side of the double doors and area rugs under each seating area and Bob's your uncle!...See Morefireplace dilema
Comments (9)I must admit I don't like it either, sorry.. Given the resurgence of mid century design you can probably sell it (or store it for next owner). I'd ring a salvage yard or try ebay. I don't know a lot about the 50s but it would appear tiled fireplaces were the style (I thought there were a lot of brick ones but apparently not!) but most people removed or had no fireplace. If you want to retain character I would suggest getting a really contemporary one rather than a fireplace from another period but that may just be me! Lovely room though...See MoreNeed help with my sitting room
Comments (5)Your room looks large and lovely but with an entrance at one end and a fireplace at the other can seem a bit long. Firstly take EVERYTHING out. This will show the room in the best advantage and get rid of clutter. Only put back things you absolutely love. I would put two sofas or a sofa and two chairs (they don't have to be a suite) in front of the fireplace OR get a solid coloured L shaped sofa as it seems you are orienting the room toward the TV. You could then put a nice rug under a light-feeling coffee table (maybe glass and wood to pick up your chimney breast) in the middle. This would allow you to get rid of the multiple small side tables. I would lighten up the alcoves alongside the fireplace, either paint or light wallpaper. Get a proper piece of furniture for the TV to stand on. TV stands are ugly. There's lots to choose from. Try IKEA. Take down the heavy curtains and put in Roman blinds in a print fabric you love (try to find one with at least 3 colours) and coordinate with your rug. You could then use colours in this to make/pick throws and pillows. At the end near the door you could put in a small table and your rocking chair and make it like a separate area for music or reading with a nice standing lamp. Get some inexpensive drum light shades to update the lighting and put in another standing lamp by your sofa, as mentioned above, and lower your pictures to eye height. Good luck!...See MoreDining/Living Room Help Needed
Comments (0)Hi all, I bought my first home (Yay!) and I was wondering how you would design the following living/dining room. I have attached the measures as the pictures are from the original add and might look more spacious than it really is. The living room kinda has to happen where the fireplace is, which is also where you enter the room from the hall, but I am struggling to fit a couch in there that you don’t fall over. I’m thinking of moving the dining area to the black wall now and the couch to the other end of the room which is also the west and garden facing side. But then I’d lose the lovely fire place. So that’s my Dilemma thaha :) Let me know what you think. Any help is greatly appreciated :D...See MoreJuliet Docherty
