Tile flooring on timber floor ?

hi,

I am in the process of getting a rear extension and renovating my house.

As part of extension, I am planning to put tiles with underfloor heating . while getting this done, I am tempted to tile floor my new Porche and hallway to give it a continuity .

as mine is 1930s house, it's got timber flooring. my builder is saying tiling on timber floors might lead to tiles cracking etc due to movement and recommends putting in concrete to before tiling, which is a bit expensive and disruptive as well.

is there anyone who has got tiling on timber floor along with underfloor heating ? what's been the experience like ? would u recommend ?

We have electric UFH on wooden floorboards and tile on top with no problems. We had to have some form of matting laid on the floorboards to ensure that the tiles wouldn’t crack. We have this in 2 rooms. A decent tiler should be able to advise you about this.

100% Wood. I actually am installing for the second time wood flooring in my kitchen and dining area in fact the whole first floor. I did the second floor in Brazilian Cherry and just love it so much more than the oak that I currently have. However if I had to choose I would choose the oak floors over tile every time. They wear better look so much prettier. And like the previous poster pointed out I hate dirty grout lines.

I assume you meant "floor". Tiles are usually considered the safer option in areas that have potential for spills or floods. Do you have heavy traffic (shoes worn in house, animals, children, etc) in these areas? If so, then you will have to worry about scratches in the wood and the occasional sanding/refinishing of the floor. You will definitely want the underfloor heating if you live in an area that gets cold. It is a personal choice, as I put wood in my kitchen/sitting room, because I love the warm look and feel of wood. However, I constantly worry about the scratches from the chairs and stools. We don't wear shoes in the house, nor do we have any animals, but I have had to put felt pads on all of the legs of the furniture.

adding a small bathroom extension to garage. 5ft wide and 12 ft long. Wet room on the end wall, whb in the middle and toilet on the other end wall. I would like to have a slate tile on the floor and walls of the wet room section. Should I tile the entire room floor in the slate too?

looks like new 🙂 do you remember if you put plywood on floorboards and then tiled ? also are you happy with the electric uf heating ? I heard it's quite expensive to run ?

Hi, I don’t have UFH but I do have porcelain tiles over floorboards. We were advised to lay boarding all over the floorboards before laying the tiles which we did.

Previously we had ceramic tiles laid over a metal webbing but they cracked in many places - we were lied to by the tiler and tile company who said it would be fine - it wasn’t!

My porcelain kitchen tiles are now 10 years old and no cracking of the tiles or the grout.

There is a product called tile backing board, but I’ve never used it.

hi,

it is possible to tile on a timber floor provided that there is a matting placed over the boards before tiling. there are a number of systems out there to use, but a tried and tested product is ditramat. if the floorboards are properly secured to the substrate . the matting will be fine as long as instructions are followed and the subfloor does not have a lot of movement. what will make a difference is the tile you use and the size of grout joint that is used., it may be wise not to have a 1 or 2mm joint as this can result in cracking of the grout or tile.

I have used ditramat in the past and found it a durable product. best used with a porcelain tile as it has it's own inherent strength over ceramic tiles, but you can use it with ceramic tiles.

important to use flexible adhesive groan good brand Mapei, Bal are ok. if you have a good tiler they can advise. tip dont skimp on the system you use. there are many cheaper alternatives.
