Help with laminate stairs and landing...

Hey team,

Planning to do laminate on the main floor and on the stairs going up to the bedrooms. We will be carpeting the bedrooms because we like the feel. We have a landing at the top of the joining a very small area that connects the bedrooms together. Should I do the top of the stairs and area that joins the bedrooms with the laminate or the carpet that will be in the bedrooms. I like the idea of the whole top floor flowing with one type of floor.

Help!?

I think the landing should be carpet If the bedrooms are carpeted as it’ll feel nice when leaving the room underfoot. Personally I’d not laminate stairs. I’m thinking from a safety aspect. Laminate is more slippery than carpet and It’s a long way to fall.

Choose something that goes with the bedroom carpets. Personally I like I similar colour throughout the house for continuity. I would choose a neutral- perhaps a warm grey

Carpet on stairs, laminate on landing?

Hi, I have semi-solid wood flooring in the hallway of my house and I want to put laminate upstairs in the bedrooms and the landing but I'm confused about what to do with the stairs. Ideally I'd like a laminate stairs but am concerned about it not matching the wood in the hall and I've also been told by various suppliers that it's an awkward job that they don't usually do. I'd also be worried about children slipping on a laminate stairs. If I go with carpet I'd prefer not to have to carpet the landing as well but am worried that might look strange and how to finish the top step seems to be a difficulty as well both from an aesthetic and safety point of view. Any advice would be much appreciated!

We did a complete renovation of a staircase in Donabate - it was run down and was in need of an up-lift! The carpet was removed and new maintenance free, high pressure laminate treads and risers were built on top of the existing staircase. The side stringer panels were given a maintenance free white veneer finish and the existing staircase accessories were removed. @Daisy England thanks for the response. Ya I think all carpet upstairs is best. I like carpet on the stairs but we are seeking that cleaner look! they will be slippery though.

Hi Adam,

Yes stairs can look great without carpet. You have to add non slip pads to the end of the step to prevent slipping. They are transparent so quite discreet.

Stairs without carpet can also be considerably noisier than carpeted ones, so if you have kids and they wear shoes indoors you might want to think about insulating under the stairs to help absorb the sound.
