How to decorate a dark narrow hallway with lots of wooden frames?
Hi Houzzers, my first post - quite a design novice so would love your help, please! My flat is an ex-council one, c. 1960s I think. The hallway is long and narrow, and whilst it looks relatively light here, that's short-lived - most of the day it feels very dark. When we moved in it was in a terrible state and I couldn't figure out what to do with the wood, so we just cleaned it up and painted the floor, and did the walls white as a temporary fix. I'd love to make it a more impactful entrance to my home, warmer and inviting, and lighter. But the wood - what to do? It is better to make a feature out of it - either treating it and leaving it looking like wood, or painting a contrasting colour - or to blend it in? Every room, and storage, in the hallway has a wooden frame, plus the doorways have windows above. There's also extra panels from a door we closed up. Hope the pics make sense! Would love any ideas. Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. You already have the wrought iron, which definitely dictates a certain look. I hesitate to recommend a specific color from my monitor, but look at the BM colors in the 1037’s through the 1078’s and see if there is something there which looks good with the tile....See MoreNeed help for my entrance hall wall!
Comments (16)A niche would be a good way to add some drama without infringing on your circulation space. It doesn't have to be deep to be effective. You can do one simple vertical rectangle, and line the back with a mirror, or add some colour with paint, wallcovering or wood. Comments (16)What I'm actually wondering though is about mixing the metals - so having the chandelier and lamps with the touch of silver - or would I be better to source antique brass lamps like I have in some other rooms in the house - I kind of wanted to feature quite a bit of glass, and generally the glass comes with chrome, but I'm not sure if it's too modern for the sideboard etc, and mores worried about the clash of metals, but something tells me it might be ok in this instance! I have chrome taps and rainfall shower head in new bathroom and kept with antique brass for the light fittings and door/press knobs. 3 years agoI would paint all the wood white. It looks like someone wanted to create a country beamed look maybe? If you want to get away from white you could try a taupe shade like Skimming Stone all over, creating a painted panel look something like this

3 years agoI agree with Sonia. Go with the all white effect. The same block white colour can work with dark coloured wooden flooring or geometric tiled floor to even a brightly coloured painted floor. Again using white as the dominant colour, be a bit bold using a contrast colour on both the door and ceiling. Just a thought! :)
