Design ideas of open plan living

We are about to move into a new house but the layout of the house is not quite how we would like to live in.
We both like open plan living.
I have a that image of a house entrance where as soon you enter you see a round table with vase but unfortunately it doesn’t look like we can archive this.
However, I’m sharing my floor plan if ppl can help me with my dilemma how to open this whole space up.

Definitely wait until you have lived in it for a while. We had ideas of what we wanted to do in our house before we moved in, but we waited almost 4 years. I'm glad we did as we were then able to see how we actually used the spaces, found spaces that were not used much we found the areas that were dark and cold in winter, we found where got the sun the most, we found which windows gave best views....

I understand what you're saying about the entrance. From the floor plan it seems that the entrance might appear dark and narrow, I can't tell without photos. But if it is, you can achieve something light and bright with good paint, lighting, and mirrors.

As for the open plan living, at a glance it seems the easiest option is to open up the back of the house, the kitchen and living room, to make a big kitchen diner. The two smaller rooms at the front could be kept as an office and a cosy living room.

However, since you haven't moved in yet, the best possible advice would be to wait. Live in the space for a few months or a year before you make any major decisions. This can help you avoid costly mistakes.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

When you get rid of the brown leather furniture, I suggest you again get a sofa and 2 chairs as they will offer you more flexibility than a sectional sofa. You may even have space for a sofa and 4 chairs, or sofa and 3 chairs. It totally depends on your space and layout. Your choice for your sun room furniture should complement the living room, but be somewhat different. You may want to use lighter colors in the sun room section and more plants. The lighter colors will better withstand the fading problems that sun can cause and the plants will benefit from the sun.

Hi I notice your blind and lamp are Laura Ashley Pelham. Laura Ashley does a duck egg white, pale duck egg and duck egg paint colours. Maybe you could have the duck egg white as the predominant colour and use in both rooms but also use the pale duck egg or duck egg in the lounge, or add some wallpaper. Not sure grey walls would work with the kitchen units. Perhaps more of a taupe/warm grey would work in both spaces though.

There is always a way of making a house what you want as long as you are not constrained by budget or permission.

This means you could have a wide entrance with a table on the middle of it. This might mean moving the door or the stairs so you have to think about what else you want to achieve and what budget is available.

Hi Rishika,

The corridor & the staircase are in most cases a fire escape route. You have to consider this before opening any room to it.

You can't have the kitchen open with a fire escape corridor, unless you have a sprinkler system.

Because every single room is linked to this corridor, most of the alteration could be subject to building control & fire safety regs. In many cases the authorities can ask you to separate rooms with fire rated glass partitions.

Thus said, these are important things to keep in mind, but your house has a lot of potential.
