Electric heating and hot water

2 bedroom flat in a block with no gas. Wanting advice on the best heating and hot water options. The flat is totally stripped out and economy 7 is available. I am looking to install a bath and shower. I have previously fitted out a 1 bedroom with just a shower, this I installed an electric shower, rointe heaters and a 15ltr ariston undersink heater which works well. opinions are welcome on elec combis, unvented systems for both heating and hot water? infra red heaters?

I think your choice depends on who you are renovating it for.
If you are reselling or renting consider the return on investment- if it is a high priced area a higher priced solution might pay for its self.
In my humble opinion an electric combi boiler is the best option- buyers like radiators and the green credentials of an electric combi. An electric combi will cost about 40 % more to run (than gas) but will probably help the saleability more than storage heaters.
If it were my own home and I had stripped out everything I might be tempted to consider the combi to a wet underfloor heating system- although more expensive to install it should be cheaper to run and adds another layer of sound insulation to floors which can help reduce noise in flats. Underfloor heating is also supposed to be better if you have a high ceiling and no radiators means more wall space.

I would not go down the Economy 7 route - means you will be stuck with storage heaters - very unreliable to control in the UK weather - wear days mean the heaters are on, cold days no heating etc. Normal electric heaters which are on a time switch can be effective - just depends how they are used.

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

OK then I think you might have to work asymmetrically. Instead of many cupboard doors, over your boiler, have one door placed over it with a push in push out system to open it. This will create a smooth "wall" - paint this and the wall above the brick area cream and the brick below grey.I would then change the cabinet on the other side so that you use cream with a grey counter and even grey shelves...Could this work better?More photos would certainly help? Where is your chalet?

i agree! yes those are doors to hotpress on the left so there will be dead space. Will attach those floor plans now shortly. Its definitely odd and its not sitting right with me. We are confined to a tiny space for laundry and that laundry chute on the right top corner (not pictured) is not movable to any other point. Its also supposed to be pictured as being atttatched to the ceiling above so the clothes are concealed. Its an old protected house so the window had to stay making it look very asymmetrical. Thanks for any further input! The problem is that we've already ordered the doors etc so theres no going back. Any ideas on what someone would have done had they the opportunity from scratch would be also well received! (we have loads of storage in a separate utility so this laundry is purely for clothes) Thanks in advance folks!

We regularly fit these systems on the houses we do as well as solar panels especially on new builds. we are not a solar company but always advise our customers on these option as they can save you a great deal of money as well as a tax free income. Air source heat pumps Like ground source heat pumps, air-to-water ASHPs work better with underfloor heating systems. If underfloor heating is not possible, large radiators should be used. This is because the heat generated by the heat pump is not as high as that produced by a conventional boiler, so a larger surface area is needed to achieve similar temperatures in your home. Air-to-water heat pumps could be better suited to new-build properties than retrofit - this is because costs could be reduced if the heat pump is included as part of the building specification, rather than having to retrofit underfloor heating later on. Heat pumps can save you more on your heating bills if you're replacing an electric, oil, LPG or coal system, rather than gas. A well-insulated house is essential to best optimise the heat generated by your ASHP - otherwise the heat the pump is generating escapes more easily. Once in place, the heat pump should require little maintenance. Air-to-water heat pumps qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Air source heat pump costs and savings ASHPs are cheaper than ground source heat pumps. The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates that the cost of installing a typical ASHP system ranges between £7,000 and £11,000. The payback period (the time taken to recoup the cost of the system in energy savings) depends on how efficiently your system works, the type of system you're replacing, whether you can get money with the RHI and how you'll be using the heat generated from the pump. The EST says that an average performing air source heat pump in an average four-bedroom detached home could save: between £360 to £555 a year if replacing oil (non-condensing) between £1,200 and £1,805 a year if replacing LPG (non-condensing) between £715 and £1,295 a year if replacing electric heating (old storage heaters).
