Help! Messy shoes/coats cupboard under stairs ;(

Hope you are keeping safe.
I am at the end of my tether with our coat/shoes cupboard.
Just for some background: We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 kids and 1 young adult) living in the house.
We have only 1 cupboard for all the coats and shoes in our entrance hall.
It is full and always a mess...
I tried to installed shoes racks, but the cupboard is deep so my husband has to crawl to get to his and my young daughters don’t seem to care about those and throw their shoes everywhere.
Coats are packed on the small rack and it is difficult to close the cupboard.
On top of all this, the cupboard is right by the main door, so everyone is dropping their bags in front of the cupboard, making it impossible to open it to put stuff in.
Anyway, you can see, I cannot stand that cupboard! :)
Do you have any suggestions on how to make it more usable? Any ideas??
I cannot think of anything ;(

Comments (9)Carpet on the stairs will help with sound! But if stairs are good enough, just paint them all white! Add a stencil on the riser - numbers or a saying is always fun...or even add family member names. Do you like bold colors? If so, the handrail wall could be a green apple. Something that works w the pretty stain glass. Also upstairs, there looks to be space to make that a built in bookcase. As for under the stairs, you can take out studs but you can build deep shelves and give it a stair step look. If you have large gym bags, make some large enough to fit sliding them in. Whenever we put in storage like that, we add plugs for iPads and cellphones. Easy way to remember to charge them! Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. Comments (3)Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Comments (11)I don’t think your plan for a playroom is an economical plan. Firstly it’s an additional small room- this house has enough rooms for any family- what you need is larger rooms. You have stated you want a kitchen with an island- the space you currently have won’t accommodate an island but if you did extend the kitchen this will likely add far more to the resale value. The rooms at the back of this house have two doors to the patio- you intend putting the playroom just here meaning you loose the best route to your garden most likely resolved by replacing the Dining room window with French doors….. and moving the radiator, replacing the floor and building a new patio! The living room at the back of the house could be a playroom for the next few years- perhaps you should make an aperture to the dining room to keep an eye on the kids....See MoreSue S

Getting the kids (& husband...) to at least put their shoes and coat IN the cupboard is already an every day battle. It won’t be at all possible to ask them to put those somewhere else.
My shoes and cost are already in my wardrobe to make space; but realistically, I cannot expect them to do the same...I have installed 2 motion-activated lights in the cupboard. However with the coats in the way, it is only partially illuminating the shoes.
The main problem is access to the shoes racks.
I have seen pull out shoes racks, but it seems to be more for side cupboard of stairs (see pictures). I never saw anything for « front » under stairs cupboard, when coat and shoes are on top of each other.I am happy to rip out and replace this cupboard with something else (eg asking a carpenter for a specific design) if anyone as suggestions/ideas :)
I cannot think of any practical solution... :(

4 years agoWhy not use the door itself and have a rack or hooks for either shoes or coats. So when the door is open everything is more spread out and easier to reach. You’d probably have to remove the shelf and rail to accommodate storage on the door. Also added another idea for stair storage.

4 years agoI think because the cupboard is quite deep it’s harder to find shoes and put away. I like Sue‘s idea of having hooks instead of the rail so coats are against the walls, something like this?
