External house plinth replacement

Our 1927 semi has a cement plinth around the front and side of the house. It had detached itself and the where lots of cracks. We want to replace it because the top is non standard bricks. but are concerned that it goes against the idea of not bridging the dpc.

One idea we have is to render up to the dpc and put a bead line in. Might look odd though.

Any suggestions? I’m struggling to find any houses with this.

Hi, rendering up to the DPC is sensible. Previously I have done this on my own home - preparation was important - I removed all lose material and filled holes (but not Air Bricks - drill these to keep open) . I prepared with a dilute un-bond pva glue coating, then used a very rich and wet mix 1:2 (cement and fine sand) and painted this over with a wall paper paste brush and then painted with a bitumen. Replacement cast iron air brick would help the final look....

aaah ! makes sense now - hey any one can grow parsley, basil or thyme ! you can buy them in pots in the supermarket when (and if) you kill them !!! my husband thinks I have green fingers because our herbs always look great !!! little does he know I replace them monthly !!! lol !! and a sprig looks great on tinned soup, that you can then claim you cooked from scratch too !!!

If you want the look of the fireplace you posted but are scared that the dark grey will flood your room, you could paint just the one panel/side wall with the grey, paint the fireplace frame white, and then paint the rest of the room a more light neutral colour. It will also create a more contemporary look and create more focus to your fireplace. Alternatively you may feel more safe to paint the fireplace frame a neutral colour to match the neutral walls. When you are ready to replace the fireplace, I would suggest a bio ethanol burner as a simple solution with minimal DIY work and an option of different styles. Had a bid in a house in Mayo accepted, but the survey has raised concern about Pyrite in the external leaf of the walls, should I pull out or not? What would it cost to replace these walls?
