colour paint for garage in garden?

questions:-

  1. will I need to jet wash the ingrained dirty parts of the wall before I paint it or wil the paint go on ok without cleaning?

  2. should I paint it white to blend in with the windows and the white extension adjacent or go for a softer colour?

  3. which brand is best ie sandtex? Ideally one coat application would be preferable and something waterproof to help stop the much from adhering.

It’s a fine textured render which has never been painted.

Was going to do it while I’m ‘off’ - that’s if I can actually get hold of some paint!!

    I would paint it a colour that will go with some kind of specific planting. I had a shed once that I painted a soft blue/green and then planted coral coloured climbing roses all over it, even though not really planned it looked amazing. Dark glossy climbers look good on pale render, Actinidia Kolomikta could look amazing on a dark blue/black.

      No expert, but these are my thoughts

      1. I would certainly clean. Be careful with the with the jetwasher to not damage the render though. Keep distance (where have I heard that before?...)

      2. A softer colour, or perhaps even anthracite to make the building appear receding. I don’t think it’s necessary to give it the same colour as the main house.

      3. Don't skimp on coats and quality.

      I would think an undercoat/primer is a must.

      Oh I didn’t think you would need a primer with n outdoor render paint? I understand two coats though as not sure how thick it would be.

      I was thinking white would be easier to get hold of without having to get samples and testers in, ha ha.
      I did think about a darker colour but then I have these large trellis panels with realistic foliage on them that we were going to put on the large areas anyway so perhaps you wouldn’t see so much white then?
      I can’t face painting all the pvc if I go dark so it might stand out like a sore thumb?

      North facing garden

      Hi everyone, Me and my boyfriend are looking at buying a new house with a north facing garden. On all the sides of the garden there are concrete walls which separate the property from its neighbors. Would this be something that would stop you from buying a house? Are there any tricks that i could use to maximize the light in the garden? The first ideas that come to mind are painting the concrete walls in a warm cream color for example, i could improvise and paint one wall with a softer orange or green color etc. I would greatly appreciate your advice and any suggestions.       Can you perhaps leave as is?

      From what I can see (I’m writing this enjoying the somewhat blinding spring sun) it doesn’t look too bad and with your (artificial or otherwise) planting plan, it will look even better I feel.

      Perhaps if I jetwashed it all carefully but it’s covered in dirty black marks 🙈 it looks disgusting, lol. When it’s clean it’s not so bad.

      I don’t think we will plant up this wall but we have lots of bushes/plants growing in front of it on the raised beds that are mostly green (non flowering)

      I have jet washed most of the black marks off today but it’s still really dirty so I will need to see if I can get hold of some bulk white vinegar to spray on it or see if my Algon patio cleaner will work at dislodging the ingrained green algae. Before I can leave or paint it either way, lol.

      Husband says we should paint it bright pink, ha ha ha. (I’m 99% sure he was joking..)

      🤣 yes it would! It would actually be quite nice ...

      We acquired an old 30’s wood fire surround. He suggested we paint it and use it as a feature in the garden. I think he may be coming down with something 🙊

      I can’t see properly from the photos but the dark stains look slightly green. Is it mould/mildew?

      We’ve got exactly the same with our garage and fence at the moment. I bought “wet and forget” from Amazon (this week I ordered and had it delivered within a couple of days) and it’s been fantastic. Within a couple of days it’s made a difference (online it says it continues to work after painting and to leave it a few weeks but I was impatient) I don’t have any photos of the garage but the difference it made to the fence was huge.

      Hi Tani. Use bleach. Mix up a fairly strong solution about 5 parts warm water or less to 1 part bleach then scrub and rinse. Might need repeating a few times tho on a vertical surface. Just tried it on a stubborn patch on the patio which has been bugging me all year and it worked well. Soda crystals may also be worth a try. I’ve also got a similar product to Wet n Forget which I got from Amazon and it’s great for killing the moss and algae on awkward surfaces. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultima-Plus-XP-Moss-Killer-Ingredient/dp/B017KP2U28
      Not sure about pink 😄 but I’d go for the same colour as the house.

      Great thanks both! Will see if I can get the wet and forget first online so I don’t have to go out to get the bleach 😂

      Ie the other one - depends how much I need as the XP stuff is 2 bottles only.
      My fences at the back are covered in algae as well so could paint it on those as well! And the side of my house .. hummmm

      And yes sorry, what is left is mostly algae and lichen at the bottom of the garage. It wasn’t even budging with the jet wash so that will definately need a strong solution on it.
      We had a leak in the gutter at the top which I repaired the other day with some outdoor waterproof sealer so that should stop a lot of the damp conditions. It doesn’t get any sun at the bottom though because of the raised garden (obviously the chucked all the soil to make raised beds when they dug the garage foundations out! It’s a couple of feet difference at the top of the garden to the bottom.

      • re the colour. I told my OH I had ordered some pink paint last night and he looked like a rabbit caught in headlights , LOL.

      Think the XP stuff comes in a one bottle option as well Tani. Only got it because I was put off by the price of the Wet n Forget although reviews are very good, plus it has more active ingredient than some other brands such Patio Magic for instance and I use a hand pump pressure sprayer to apply. Whichever one takes a few days before you see results but should last for ages. 5 litre has done patio twice, front yard, plus walls and shed roofs and I still have half a bottle left🙂.

      Ordered a big sprayer as well as the small one we have we use for spraying the veg so can’t use that, ha ha.

      Hi ED - it's actually white the new K render on the extension. The side and front of the old part of the house is cream but I'm painting it all sparkly white, haha. Gota 20L tub of commercial masonry paint locally half price to use so just waiting for the algae remover to kick in and will lightly jet wash everything down then let it dry then get to work painting!!


      I'm also working on the large concrete slab patio at the top of the garden and staining it all with an outdoor stain/sealer so waiting for that to arrive as well. Think it will take me all of quarantine just cleaning and painting, LOL

      So... I ended up going for white because
      A) it was easier to get hold off
      B) I plan on painting the old front of the house white so figured the 60L tub I could get locally would do both.

      It’s definitely cleaner looking that for certain.
      Only issues we have ...

      is that it’s BLINDING in the afternoon and

      It looks dirty grey when the sun isn’t on it - especially next to the K rend which isn’t white at all but more of a soft white now they are both done, lol.

      It’s had two coats of paint on the original nude render so I’m wondering if the grey is because it needs a third coat??

      We do plan on putting a load of trellis up to disguise the plain walls anyway so that will stop the blinding effect, ha ha.
      Just got to get used to it I guess.

      Pic of it by the K rend extension although you probably can’t tell at all the colour difference on the photo (especially as the garage is in shade right now)

      Oh and I also need to white silicone under the fascia board where it meets the wall and clean the gutters up as they are dirty

      I like it, it has a Mediterranean vibe. Just needs a grapevine to add to the style! They’re really easy to grow even in the UK. Well done 👏🍁

      Looks great. Even better once plants are on it.


      I'm not sure if its just the picture but it does look like you can still see roller marks on it so it probably could do with another coat.

      @arc- I'd just finished painting it so it's not dry yet which is why you might still see them. But yes, if they are visible later then I will have to do another coat, argh. lol

      I too like it, but it‘s possibly a little too (brilliant) white.

      Perhaps one (or two) coats with a slightly ‘softer’ white would make it perfect.

      Could do that down the line once the diy stores reopen and I can get some better paint tones. At least it has a better base coat colour now anyway to work from, ha ha

      I think this looks great.
      Of course in the usual drab light of the U.K. it has the potential to look grey. If it were mine I would probably paint it to match the render of the house. But with some greenery I’m sure you won’t see it soon.

      It did look nice in the late west sun but we don’t get that all day, ha ha 😂
      It’s hard to match the K rend as not sure if they do a paint match. Will investigate though

      Looks great Tani. So much cleaner🙂. Although I think I agree and get it colour matched to the house at a later date. But enjoy it’s fresh blindingness (sorry) for now. Some greenery and perhaps a couple of hanging baskets will definitely help.

      Actually - the paint has a weird blue tinge to it and I don’t know if I really like it!! It’s find when it has the sun on it but it looks cold blue toned the rest of the day. Doesn’t even look that nice with the trellis on it I mocked up!

      Does anyone know if white masonry paint does give off a blue tinge? Worried as bought this commercial giant vat of it to do the main house as well but if it’s going to look this blue (being north facing) then I’m not sure i want to use it 🤨

      Any recommendations for a masonry paint that is a softer white but not ivory/cream??

      Maybe its brilliant bright white? That gives of a blue tinge. Just plain white should be okay.

      It doesn’t say on the tin - just says white, lol.
      Didn’t realise that though re brilliant white - which weirdly you would expect to be extra white with no tones ha ha.
      I’ve seen a couple of houses with a sort of off white but modern look to them which is warm but not cream or magnolia. Not sure what colour it is as can’t even go and ask them, lol.

      Hi guys!!

      Updating this as I need more help.

      Well the paint has not weathered well!!! Even though I had cleaned the original wall and got rid of the algae - it's come back and is now bright green all along the bottom of the garage. Also some of the paint is flaking on the front which it shouldn't do surely if it's masonry??


      So I'm back to square one, sigh.


      I plan on buying a specialist algae remover from a specialist company which is super strong and then perhaps getting an undercoat (as previously mentioned by ED) or sealer to seal existing finish. then using a branded masonry paint like stormshield by Johnstones.


      However - I'm now thinking of painting it in a darker grey anthracite colour as after having had it white for a few months, I really don't like it!

      BUT - I still have the issue of all the off white windows and guttering which has yellowed slightly so don't know if I am just making far more work for myself.

      I feel the darker colour would hide any returning algae but then the bad plastic will look awful next to it so I don't know what to do.


      Also I'm limited on timescale as we are putting the house on the market in a few months and I have so much painting to do outside (the house front, garage, all the new gates and fencing - and it's all got to be done as soon as the frost goes and when it's not rainy! argh.
