Is it True? (Paint & Tools)

Hello Everyone,

Speaking from experience and trawling through many conflicting articles: I am interested in gleaning some of your wisdom here!

There are many conflicting stories about how to achieve the best interior finish with paint:

-Purchasing the best tools, and not necessarily the best paint are suggested: is this true?

-The opposite of this: purchasing the best paint and not the best tools: is this true?

-I personally advise and purchase Acrylic Matt and expensive tools, so this does not paint an accurate picture of the best investments (no pun intended!)

Interested to know your thoughts, experiences and wisdom around this???

Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Enjoy experimenting untill you get something you're happy with - good luck!

That is true alright, though even with a patterned carpet they usually keep a mat for people to wipe their feet on by the door, or if people like to remove boots or shoes when entering ( not that common here) but great idea. The trouble with the patterned carpet was if anything fell on the floor you could hardly find it !!

I love the cabin in the woods, its a intimate setting where you are drawn to the outside whilst keeping snug indoors. The use of fabrics sets it apart from the usual cold designs of other modern rooms. The attention detail in the selection of furniture pieces keeps it modern yet functional.

Hi E D, Thank you for the comment!, The most recent article I read suggested it does not matter about using the cheapest quality paint, but if the tools are good quality it will achieve a superior finish (scratching head moment ?!)

I used reasonably affordable paint (not the cheapest one, but close) for our livingroom ceiling and bathroom (and it said special bathroom paint!!). I have enormous regrets, as the ceiling is full of strips and the bathroom walls and ceiling is chipping.. Same goes for woodwork, reasonable alkyd offwhite now looks like a chainsmoker sat in our toilet for a year (without daylight it turned yellow).. I'm not buying the cheap paint again. For the exterior woodwork I used fairly pricey paint and it was a dream to paint with (and decent brushes)! And the quite expensive black wallpaint I used in our boy's bedroom needed just one coat! Then again, we have this cheap-stuff-store called Action (don't now if you have) and their brushes were tested 3rd place by professional painters, but a third of the #1 price. So, it's probably not about money, but trial and error.

I’ve tried cheap and expensive paint and on walls they’re much of a muchness. However on woodwork cheap is no good. My worst woodwork paint was Wilko Satinwood which started to peel and flake pretty quickly. Load of rubbish. I hate cleaning paintbrushes so I tend to buy cheap ones and throw them away after use.............shhhh don’t tell anyone 😱

Hi Rinq: Great insight, thank you for all your wisdom!, really helpful. The only paint I have ever used which has given me long-lasting durability, and avoided the 'chain smoker' effect has been Acrylic Matt (I think people are put off by the word 'acrylic' thinking it has a shiny surface, even though it dries like a normal flatt matt) It was expensive but lasted a long time, so was really worth it!. Great tip regarding the brushes, as I have not found perfection where these are concerned even Harris (with their royal seal of approval!). I have seen professionals swear by the use of an undercoat: which they say gives the ultimate superior finish. I think trail and error is the key :)

Hi SPEAK and all, I think it's a great question!

i remember the time when friend of my recommended myself to his client, I took set of brushes from off license for 3£ and did a one day job for £60. I felt sorry for the lady, because the paint landed on her new carpet few times and it was hard to remove. I wasn't a good painter and I'm not afraid to say that. And day rate I've charged back than speak by it self. I was lucky enough to meet a painter with 40 or 50 years of experience in London painting, and worked with him on a various of projects, small and bigger. We still chat from time to time. Great chap!

So I've must say it took some time for me to understand that quality materials and tools are necessary for me to do a good and quality job.

if I had the brushes and better tools back then, I wouldn't be able to get the best from them. Learning and making a mistakes it's a good think, and btw I think she paid me only £30 on the end. :o

p.s

Bear in mind when hiring a cheap labour, can cost you more than you think on the end.

one odd day I've painted half of the house for one client, they were very happy with the quality so they called me to paint the hallway, in the mean time they took other quotes and choose half priced compared to my one. I know this, because they called me for the third time to see finished hallway for the half price, and they've asked me if I can do something with it...

of course I' had to rise the original price because it was much more to do than originally...

cheap isn't good, good isn't cheap!

Thanks for your response: I could not agree more!: there is the wise old saying 'you get what you pay for' and I do believe this especially when it comes to a quality finish. Great insight regarding tools and materials and given your experience, expertise and wisdom, I had a suspect feeling that using quality tools but not quality paint, could only result in a less than superior finish!
