filling an empty wall
I would like to add an arched windowpane mirror to reflect the window. this will be placed above the side of the sofa. this leaves with two areas left and right. the one on the right towards the door is tptally wasted but it's a good 1.60cm x 2.10cm. I don't know what to do with these areas separed off by the sofa. I am mostly concerned about furniture, especially sideboards/cupboards. The sofa is some 40 cm from the wall. also the lights aee not right.
any ideas would be appreciated.

4 years agoI love those window mirrors, so yes try it there. I wouldn’t rush into putting anything either side until you’ve lived with it for a few days. You may not need anything - less is more! However, I do think a floor lamp peeping over the sofa would also look good and will give you more light. There doesn’t seem to be many lights in the room, except for the main one and the floor lamp near the little chair. Or a side table with a lamp on it to create the same effect. Every sofa/armchair in my house has a floor lamp just behind it.

Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Comments (5)Do you mean in the kitchen specifically or in the whole house? In the kitchen have a cupboard or two with safe things - plastic food boxes, utensils towels, aprons, plastic bowls, down low. Put catches on anywhere that has dangerous or breakable stuff. Teach them (show and repeat repeat repeat!) that some cupboards are allowed and some off limits. (Level of success in this may depend on the kid. My eldest has always listened, my youngest doesn't) Elsewhere in the house, same principle. Put the stuff that is safe for them in the lower cabinets or in storage boxes - e.g. in my hall I store shoes, hats, gloves etc in soft ikea boxes or tub trugs under a table or bench. If they pull it all out, well, it is fun for them, doesn't take me an age to put back, and they feel they have had some lee-way. However, I don't do this in every room, as I personally don't agree with putting everything that is not theirs, out of reach or above their eye level. If you don't do this, they will hopefully learn that not everything is there for them to play with and you have items that are yours. For example, I have my glasses and phone on my bedside table in the morning - if any small child reaches for them they are told "ahuh! MUMMY's...!!!" Usually stops them in their tracks at least for a second! Again, success depends on the child but if they are told often enough they will have learnt what is off limits by the time they are, maybe 4? As for keeping the child corner tidy - use boxes, bins, shelves and put them behind the sofa when not in use./ Re paint scuffs - I dont' allow crayons and pencils anywhere but the kitchen, no hands on the walls, or things with wheels to be scuffed against the wall, BUT I accept it will happen and I'll repaint in a year or two when they are more in control of their bodies!...See MoreKitchen wall colour

I was contemplating putting a similar light like yours above the cabinet, but decided I prefer lights on either side, as there is a lot of space which I'd like to fill a little. I will also put them on top of tiles, so another point to consider. The ones I had chosen only protrude 90 mm from the wall, so I wonder if they should protrude at least the same as the cabinet, which is 150 mm, to illuminate the face, when putting on make up or in general. Here is a picture of the lights I really liked...and another one in a room situation ( not my bathroom), but they are next to a mirror with minimal depth. I like them a lot, but am open to other options, just wondered about projection....See More

4 years agoi tried again and indeed it opens up the space much more! I think I'd really like if the sofa was slimmer. maybe something to reconsider. the wall would develop in a much more coherent way and the room looks so much larger that a sofa may be worth the investment perhaps!

4 years ago@catsitalian the sofa looks great there. Perhaps move the little chair to the other side of the fireplace? Then you can have a little side table and lamp next to the sofa. It’s crying out for a nice big rug. Dunelm do loads and they’re quite reasonable. Maybe something neutral or faded, like this
