In the room, the only wall where I can have a fitted wardrobe has a light switch. I need to move it slightly, so a 1 meter wardrobe fits in there. Anyone knows if this is possible? Thanks! :)
It depends rather on what the wall is constructed of and how far you want to move the switch. It is probably easier (and less dusty) if it is a wooden stud wall than if it is built from brick.
If you only want to move it an inch or so then you will just need to extend the hole, move the switch and then fill the space left behind. But if you want to move it further than that then strictly speaking you will need to move the cable as well since the regs say that the cable is supposed to run vertically or horizontally from the switch.
Since you will be covering up the old position the easiest solution would be to put the new switch horizontally positioned from the old one. Run a cable from the old switch to the new and fit a blanking plate over the old switch. Less filling and it satisfies the regs with regard to cable position.
Are you doing it yourself? Just that an electrician can easily do that for you. We had our 1930s house rewired recently and the electrician moved some of the switches at our request and channelled the wiring into the wall. He then roughly filled it and we then got a plasterer to give a smooth finish. Then we painted over it to match the rest of the rooms.
No, an electrician is coming sometime next week to see what needs to be done. I wanted to have an idea if it's possible, otherwise I would need to find another place for the wardrobe. I'm glad to find out though your responses that it can be done.
There's also 'architrave switches' which are very slim about half the width of a single light switch which might be an option. Your electrician shouldn't have any problems moving any switches for you and be able to advise you of your options.
