We did an extension to the back so that we could have a more social kitchen and we pretty much live in this room now. We had a dining table in the kitchen in our last house but it was only used for kids doing homework. Now we eat at it for every meal.

The dining room I inherited when I moved house has become a very useful storage/utility room - who needs a dining room when there's enough room in the kitchen for a flexible table?
We have a round vintage 1960s table in the kitchen when there's just the two of us most of the time and we can add two leaves to make it seat eight when family and friends join us.

I personally like the kitchen, kind of a Scandinavian modern look. leave the skirts, doors and trims as is. Paint wise, I am going to invite you to a kitchen gallery that I think works well with the existing aesthetic you have now. I like the "Melrose Kitchen" in this instance, as an example of wall color. The trim is painted here, but leaving yours as is, I believe, would be fine! Happy Houzzing.

I would move the table to the window end of the room for view out and light while you eat . Perhaps turn it 90 degrees if that would work with the door opening. You may be able to seat 4. Make the rest of the right hand wall - about half of it a floor to ceiling wall of built in storage including the fridge. Suggest deep drawers for lower and double door pantry cupboards sitting above. The left hand wall in a long line of counter top with the cooker, sink, washing machine, lower cupboards or drawers. Tile backsplash along whole wall and two long open shelves plus art. Definitely replace the flooring - timber or even black and white checkerboard.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi - its such a big and important project, i really think you need to sit down with a good kitchen designer and fully tease out your requirements and then look at every possible layout option. by sitting down with someone, they will draw each possible layout to scale in front of you and that way you will be able to see the pros and cons of each design. it makes decision making much easier best of luck with the project Barry

Definitely, the reason alot people want to change their kitchens is often to change the way they live. Have the open planned space where you cook, eat and relax.

Wehther you eat more in your kitchen is completly down to the design of your new space and also if you want to eat in your kitchen. Many kitchens are too small to include an island so a designated eating space is not always available. There are a number of options; a drop down table, a peninsular, a breakfast bar, a table that comes out of a drawer but all of these options are completly reliant on the space you have.

There is no point installing an island if the space round the room is too constricted, defeats the objective, equally to have a peninsular jutting out into the room may be quite functional but it may destroy the traffic route. Generally if you are fortunate to be able to include an island or a suitable peninsular then there is no doubt that you will eat more in the kitchen, if thats what you want it for, quite often an island is designed to provide additional worktop space.

Yes, a lot of customers have mentioned this to us once the kitchens have been completed. They obviously did the work thinking that they would spend more time together as a family, but didn't appreciate just how much time they would all spend in there. It's almost making the living room redundant or a 'show' living room only to be used on special occasions.

We moved into a town house that had its large eat in kitchen on the first floor facing the front of the house. We moved the kitchen and dining to the ground floor overlooking the garden. Subsequently we have had to increase the comfortable seating as it is now the most used room in the house despite having a lovely sitting room directly above it.

Definitely. My original kitchen was developer’s kitchen —ie, it photographed well but did not function. The only place to put a table in the kitchen itself would have been in front of the back door, which is itself a natural thoroughfare from the open plan living room. Now I have a lovely breakfast bar/peninsula facing the brightest part of the kitchen, and I can easily spend hours there over breakfast, brunch or coffee. Dinner I tend to eat in front of the tv, and when I’ve visitors the main table in the dining room is used.

For the vast majority of our clients, a key reason for getting a new kitchen is to allow them to use the space more including as a dining area. In small kitchens, this can obviously be tricky, but by a clever use of space and storage, we can usually incorporate a comfortable seating area with a table or at a counter/peninsula. This ensures that our clients eat meals in the kitchen

on a regular basis.

we have just made our kitchen & small dining room into a kitchen/diner. We have yet to replace an old gas oven for a built-in electric oven but are concerned re noise from fan disturbing dining. Any suggestions for a quiet oven?

Wouldn’t you have turned the oven off by the time you sit down to eat? But no, we don’t find our oven noisy. We have a Bosch and it’s very quiet (huge amount quieter than our old Britannia range cooker) but i imagine most modern ovens are.

110% yes theres nothing worse than being in a room that isnt to your taste or doesnt feel fully done. We just recently did up our kitchen even the small things makes a different we upgraded our radiators and things like our taps, we got some gorg brass taps the other day, they just add that litte bit extra to the room!

We completed our kitchen/dining/living extension in late May and have been surprised by how much time we spend in it. The living room has the TV etc in it so we go there after tea, but 90% of our time is spent in the kitchen, chatting, cooking, chilling, ironing etc. Love it!
