large lounge diner need help me with fire and tv placement please!
I have a fairly large lounge diner. It currently has a gas fire which is not to our taste and doesn’t really do anything for the room.
We have a large tv and one of the ideas is mounting this over new fire but there is a lot of negative comments regarding this so making me re think.
If we did go tv over fire I have been advised lowest tv can go is 95cm from floor so doesn’t seem to high?
Tv is 146 cm wide by 83 cm tall so quite dominant. It has facility to be a picture when not in use.
Other option is to have a fire room divider. Many though seem very box like above fire and I don’t know how to soften this.
I have taken photos of existing fire. White bench is possibly where 3 sided room divider fire could go instead.

Comments (127)Lots of ideas....couldn't resist adding my two cents. i copied your photos and did a little cut and paste- it's messy, but hopefully gets the main idea across. i'd put your sofa in front of the large book case, chair by the fireplace, tv on the stand on the wall opposite the fireplace - so you can either look at the fire or the tv. Someone suggested using frames of one color for your photos - an inexpensive way to do that would be to spray paint them all a dark color-black goes with everything. Since your shelves are a medium tone wood, display things that are dark or light so that they contrast against the wood. Limiting your display items pallette to a few values usually helps to unify things. (I think that's why so many people want to paint the shelves or put inserts in the back to help your nice things read more clearly...some get lost). If you want to "splurge" -you may consider having a carpenter make a few solid tall cabinet doors to provide a visual break in the shelving. I'm showing 3 doors - 1 on the right side of the fireplace and 2 on the left to leave two open vertical shelves for display on each side - with things arranged to frame the fireplace as the focal point. To add some height to your big vases, consider stacking some books beneath them. Comments (37)Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. Comments (103)Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. Comments (11)I think you're right to change your plans tbh, I think pic 1 and 3 would work. Another option is a suspended woodburner. It's obviously not a divide but it gives you the break in the ceiling so acts as one. The first one attached is from fireplaceproductsUK. The other 2 are just images from leotrippi and homedesignht to show how they can act to divide a room. A much more expensive option is a glass fireplace, this is from acucraft fireplaces. I'm not sure how easy it is to find UK manufacturers/suppliers though. Alternatively you can just break the room with furniture layout and ceiling lights. The lights if hung properly ie at differing heights, clusters etc along with floor lamps will stop that cavernous feel. I can't obviously see the plan but if you're really set on a divide, and they are great!, you could set it off a side wall rather than down the centre of the room....See MoreE D

4 years agoI really like both but prefer the room divider. I'm not sure about the position of it though. It feels as if it should be where the corner of the fire is now. Could you take a wider shot showing to the right of the bench too? Tadelakt or similar above the fire to soften it? It comes in a wide choice of colours

4 years agoIt's further than I thought. My concern was the stepped in wall and also the opening to the dining area but as it's further up than I thought the ".entrance" should be fine. You would however be left with an alcove between new and old fire. I wonder what shelves would look like there (I couldn't find an exact pic) or just box it in.. Tadelakt is similar to polished concrete, polished plaster, microcement etc, you could look at any of them just to add a bit of texture/warmth. You could always pay someone to do a CAD design in your room if this is your preferred option?
Having said that if you frequently have large parties maybe it's not a great idea to have a fixed structure there? Maybe a tv and fire side by side is a better option? Will see if I can find a pic
